So I finally found a brand that pretty much all the boys like: Oxbow. Problem was I couldnt find a good fresh bag. I went on thier site found a preferred vendor close to home and they have REALLY fresh hay. So this weekend I purchased the BIG bag. It cost 30 bux, which was like getting 4 of the normal bags I was getting but paying for 3. So I contacted another retailer and found they can order a 25lb box of the western timothy for 69.99. Is that a good price?? Does anyone know of better deals on Oxbow.
Ordering hay on line or from vendors is just not cost effective when you need so much of it, I buy hay, pellets & litter from locals and all the other stuff from people here.

(note: I have 7 boys with possibly 2 rescues on the way, so i go thru a lot)

$70 for 25 lbs of hay? Uhm, yeah, that's ridiculous, especially since there is no shipping to you involved!

APD lists their 2nd cut hay as $33.49 for 25 lbs. Their shipping is high but I doubt it would be more expensive than $70. That's just outrageous.

You might want to look at classified ads/craiglist in your area to see if there are any farmers selling grass hay. You can usually get a bale of grass hay for around $3 a bale.

You may want to check around for better pricing. I order Oxbow hay through my feed store and pay $19.99 for a 9 lb. bag. $30 is crazy.

They dont like the huge cheap bale i got for like 7 dollars from my feed store. the bale is still sitting on my front lawn!

i actually checked dr fosters&smith and even with the shipping it is MUCH cheaper than 69.99. but i just worry about the "freshness".

at least when i go to the store I can see how green it is.

I think I am going to call my local feed store where I get my food & shavings from and see if they can come up with a better price. maybe if they order it special for me it will be fresh????

You could call Oxbow and ask them about it, I forget how much a 25 lb box is, but I get hay from them (they are located 45 minutes away) and all my animals love it and it is always fresh.

Phone: (800)249-0366

OOPS forgot they do not sell from their website any more, but it might be worth a try to call them and see what they think.

thanks ruby! i did actually call. they recommended that if my feed store could not get it for a comparable price that drfostersmith.com is a preferred retailer and the 25 lb bag would be at the oldest 3 weeks from their facility, which is the current turnaround time for what I am giving them now. the 50 lb bag of either hay or food comes directly from them! but 50lbs of hay.........whoa that is a lot of grass!!

My goodness! That is pretty high! I use APD, but I don't have to purchase that much hay at once... their shipping is pricey so it could very well be about the same.

Depending on the price, you might be better buying the 50lb and having some left overs!!! If kept properly it would prob hold over for awhile too!
