so I know hay is supposed to breathe - but how much? I tried dumping it out of the bag and keeping it in a basket but some of it turned brown. Does that mean its bad? I have never done that before.

What do you keep yours in? (besides the bag for those of you who store it another way)

I always keep an extra 9 lb. bag of hay stored in its original bag and box, in my closet until I need it. As for when I open the bag, I keep it in a hamper very similar to this one:

It sits next to the cage for easy accessibility.

There's going to be some brown parts in hay, so long as it's still mostly green I would think it's fine so long as it's not super dusty or has gotten moldy or anything.
I've kept mine in a box, or have just left it in the bale and taken parts off of it as needed

I buy mine in large square bales, and store them in huge cardboard boxes. Exposure to light will make hay turn brown/yellow, and of course you want it to stay somewhere dry as well.

I got a HUGE bin from Walmart for my hay, I can fit up to 10 lbs in there at once.
I just slide it under my piggy cage.

I think hay needs to "breathe" so every night when I am refilling the hay bins in the room, I make sure to turn the hay over a bit in the bin, sort of shuffle it around. It lasts a long time that way.

We purchase our hay by the bale. When I get a new bale I split it in half and put both each into their own box. After they are in their own box we punch holes into it with a phillips screwdriver so that it can breathe. I also store my hay inside my house since I live here in FL with the high humidity (my garage can at times feel like a sauna).

If you don't mind sewing; i made hay bags to put my hay in--100 % thin cotton fabric and made drawstrings--keeps fresh and storage is easy.

I don't know if this is good, but when i open a bag up, i leave it in the bag but never close it back up so it doesn't sweat and get moldy. I don't get a huge amount with only five chins, so although a pail is a great idea for some, it wouldn't work for me. I was wondering if i got a plastic bin and put the top on it if that would be good, then I'm thinking if it's closed once again, it can get slimy in there and mold.. I could be wrong, so someone please correct me if i am

I store mine the same as Sunshine Chins but, I order it online. When it arrives, I simply dump it out of the bag back into the box and punch holes in the box. As I use it, I try to "fluff" or separate the remaining hay so it can breath even better. I've never had a problem with it turning brown or molding.

Now that I think about it, I have hay here that is over a year old and still green. I bought some 3rd cut and the chins didn't seem to like it so, it's just been sitting in the chin room.
