I got a new job but now I'm having to start looking at apartments. All the apartments I have looked at only allow 2 animals max. I asked about caged animals and they still consider them animals. I am so lost and confused. I want to take them but I don't want to get evicted if they find out I have them. I don't know what to do. Any suggestions or know of a way I can still take them? I really don't want to have to give them away but I don't see any other option and if I do have to give them away, to who? I don't want to give them to just anyone. :cry3: I don't know what to do.

If it was me, I would take some pictures of my cage(s) and include it with my applications - saying that while you understand the "limit", your animals are very well cared for, are not breeding, and don't take up any more space than 2 animals would. I would also include a note saying something along the lines of being willing to pay an extra deposit or maybe even a monthly fee in order to keep your "family" together. Many landlords are accommodating to renters who show that they are responsible and proactive about things like that. Look at it from their point of view - they don't want to rent to people who collect animals or breed animals, but responsible pet owners often tend to be responsible renters! I would definitely be upfront about it though - if you wait until they ask, then that golden moment to impress them has already passed.

^ really good points. And most animal policies are really about the damage dogs and cats do. You could say they're guinea pigs! :)

I know how you feel . My boyfriend and I moved from BC to Alberta last year, and we had to rent apartment as well, like you said, alot of apartments do not allow animals. In our building, they allow dogs, cats, birds but not "rodents" and chinchillas are considered "rodents". We had no plan to give up our chins (and guinea pigs), so we have been hiding them in the apartment for 10 months now, so far, no one notices.

There were occasions that the managment had to get access to our apt to fix electricals, usually they would give us at least 24 hours notice, so we just put the animals in a smaller cage, hid them in our bedroom for a short period of time until everything was fixed.

I dont know about you, maybe you could put them at your parents'? or friends'? Some places allow animals as long as you pay deposit for each animals. Sorry I cant really help. :(

Thanks Susan. If I can't find a place to let me take them with me, I will contact you. I really don't want to give them up though.

Brittney, I am so sorry for what you are having to deal with. As a renter, I know how it goes. I second the opinions of others that have voiced them about being upfront about it. Also, what cages do you own? I don't know if my landlord is just an eccentric or what have you, but she allows the chins because "I have two cages" even though they are divided in halves for my chins. (FN) She also trusts me now and allowed me to have ****. I did have to pay an additional deposit for them, but it's worth it. I guess the FNs just look concise. I wish you luck!

Your best bet is susan if you need to house them elsewhere for a while. She will make sure they are happy till you can take them back! On the few times Ive gone Ive seen nothing but happy chins, even the ones whos shes been boarding for awhile. I definitely wouldnt give my baby away and if you have this kind of resource its best to use it!

Brit--i def would not recommend trying to sneak them. and you dont seem like you want to do that anyway. the risk with that is that not knowing there are "rodents" in the apartment.......the landlord could spray pesticide without your knowledge or something else and you would be putting your pets at risk. honesty has always been and still is the best policy.
