So, my vet has prescribed a round of Baytril for 10 days to see if the "mystery" illness with Dash can be resolved with antibiotics (seems weird to me, but hey, I'm not a vet).

The problem is, Dash is usually AWESOME about taking his meds... loved the metronidazole for the Giardia, loves metacam, but he HATES this stuff. The first three doses I finally got him to take on his own after some persistent chasing with the syringe, but tonight I had to hold him and force the issue. Also, tonight I noticed some fur missing from his nose area and the skin was bare.

Do chins sometimes rub or scratch their noses raw in a reaction to Baytril? It happened between the dose this morning at 8 am and the dose this evening at 8 pm. Should I stop giving him the stuff?

Have the vet compound it with something like OraSweet to make it taste better if you are going to use it. IMO, throwing baytril at a mystery illness would not happen to my chins, baytril causes too may problems orally with appetite loss that if I was to try something I would use tri-meth-sulfate since it has none of the nasty side effects.

i also would have started with the tri meth sulfa. i consider baytril the "big guns" and only use when something serious not to clear up a "mystery disease".

Perhaps you can call the vet & ask?? Most chins like the trimeth (pink stuff), its kinda sweet.

if you do continue with the baytril, the one time i had to use it, i mixed it with lifeline to mask the scent. if you dont have lifeline, perhaps you could use a week caffeine free tea. (steep the tea bag for only a minute, cool, and mix with baytril in syringe)

Well, I have some leftover TMS from a previous illness that has not expired. Should I treat with that instead of the Baytril?

I've stopped the Baytril. He was already not eating as much as usual and the Baytril reduced that even more. Not worth starving him to "see" if Baytril would correct the other issue.

I've ordered some Life-Line and am waiting for it to arrive to supplement. Thanks for the help you guys.
