I'm not quite sure where else to put this, but I figured if I was in here I'd get some kind of answer...
I got a new chin today (he's approximately a year old, slightly older). I got him from a woman who bought him for her daughter (on a whim from a hobby breeder...). Typical story: girl wants pet to cuddle, mom buys chin, nobody in the family knows anything about chinchillas, girl realizes chin isn't cuddly and gets a bunny, girl neglects to take chin out of his cage for a month and he doesn't have a wheel, mom posts on craigslist, I take chin.
So when I first viewed the pictures with the posting the chin looked normal, but when I first went to see him in person I noticed that his tail was somewhere between one third and one quarter of the length that it is supposed to be (it cuts off right where they usually start to fluff out majorly, I'll add a picture of him when I get ahold of a camera if anybody wants one). When I inquired as to where the other major portion of his tail had gone she told me that the breeder had told her that the mother had mistaken his tail for the umbilical cord and chewed it off.
There is no indication that this is a recent wound, I don't even think it looks like a "wound" at all. Upon examination I've found no scar tissue, and there is hair growing all over it, which gives him the appearance of just having a really short tail. It does not seem to be detrimental to his well being.
I guess my question is to any breeders in here. Have any of you seen anything similar happen to kits? Have any of you seen any birth defects that may be similar to this in kits? I'm just really wondering for my own curious purposes.

Sometimes when a chin is born the delivery is not easy for mom. When a kit gets stuck and normal contractions aren't working the mom helps things along by pulling on the kit. The kit may lose body parts like part of a tail or a paw during this process. Other times and much less often a mom may "overgroom" a kit after delivery and cause an injury. These are normal occurances. My guess is that the mom had trouble delivering your boy and pulled on his tail. It was possibly a breach birth. Your boy is just fine.

I have a female named Rosie who was breech when she was born and as a result only has part of her tail. She is just fine otherwise :)
