I took in a very sad-looking greasy boy in June. He had recently moved to the valley from the Bay Area into a house with another family and a lot of kids, dogs, and an African Gray who apparently got perch-time on his cage (there was bird poo all over the top level of his cage...) Since the move from the Bay Area, he began chewing his fur and became more skiddish and tempermental. His owner just had a new baby and couldn't spend time with him anymore. She said his name was Grumpy.

Sad Grumpy at his old home...

Well, Grumpy certainly does have his moods. He sometimes shows very dominant behavior and will mount my hand pretty aggressively and sometimes he will nip hard but not enough to break the skin. He normally will let me give him scritches for quite a while but then it's like he snaps into his dominant mode and all of a sudden tries to hump my hand...

I've been working with him to get him to stop this behavior. I have a stuffy I try to direct his attention to when he gets in his "humping" moods but he doesn't pay much attention. I am also rewarding him with an oat when he lets me give him scritches and doesn't turn into a nipping, humping chin.

I think it's working. The other day he started tail-swishing at me and I was thinking, "uh oh" but then he grabbed a hay cube and attempted to hump it. It was the funniest thing. Maybe he's finally learning he needs to take out his sexual frustrations on something else!

I was seriously thinking for a while that his name needed to be changed to Humpy...

Here's the cutie boy now. He's getting chunkier and thank goodness, he's stopped chewing and his fur is growing back in!

Wow, Sumiko, it's as if it was a totally different chin from that first pic. Great job with him and yes, lol, he totally needs a name change.

Yes, he really tried to hump a hay cube. It was the weirdest and funniest thing I'd seen!

I don't think anyone would want to adopt him if he was called "Humpy!" Actually, "Grumpy" will probably deter a lot of people too. It's like Hannibal, one of the rescues I once had here... nobody wanted to adopt him because of his name - they thought he was an evil chin. But he was a LOVE and Dawn (ticklechin) adopted him and he's getting along juuuuust fine!

i never would've guessed that was the same chin. he looks great =) definately doesn't look like a "Grumpy" anymore. although, judging from the before pic, i can see why his owners named him that. i would be grumpy too if i never got dustbaths or playtime, and had birds constantly crapping on my head.

Name him Happy or Jolly or something like that. LOL He IS happy and jolly...humping on hay cubes and such would indicate these things. For some reason I think I would name him Mr. Peepers....and I don't know why. He has a sweet little face, despite the frustrations...

A HAY CUBE! Wow...that's so funny... I have never caught anyone doing that! hehehe

he looks great! the last picture reminds me of Dumbo though lol. his ears are awesome!

I saw ZZ humping his hay dish the other day and thought that was strange. Maybe they are asserting their dominance over the hay? lol

He looks so much better in those pics. It's amazing what a lot of dust and love can do.

He looks amazing. A totally different chin for sure.

I am glad to hear that your method is working for him. :)

He's adorable and looks great. I love his big ears. He looks happy. Happy would be a good name for him. You might want to name his hay cube grumpy.

I am so happy to see this post as I saw him on Craiglist and felt so bad for him. He looks so much better and happier. You're wonderful for taking him in and getting him looking so good.

You have really saved him. He looks infinitely better! He is so lucky to ahve found you. As far as the humping, well a humping chin must be a happy chin.
