Last night I let my Chin out to play in her play area. I checked on her often. Then I heard a louder fence noise than was usual. I went to look and my two chihuahuas came with me. One chihuahua loves to look at the chin through the fence. The other chihuahua couldn't care less. But they both ran over and the "couldn't care less chihuahua" was barking though she usually did not.

I told the dogs to go out and I closed the bedroom door so the chin could play in peace. I thought the chin just did a wall surf on the fence.

A bit later I went to check on her and I don't see her in her cage or play area. But I do find "evidence" up on a piece of furniture that I have near her cage with her food, treats, and bath house on it. I also see that "someone" has taken a dust bath!!!

It seems that the dogs knew something I did not! My chin had managed to jump from the open door of the cage to the top of the furniture and then down onto the floor. She bypassed the fence entirely.

I spotted her under the bed. I looked there first having read on CnH that many escapees made it under the bed. She came out for pieces of Shredded Wheat. I grabbed her and popped her back in her cage.

As well as it worked out I did get frightened that she could have broken something in the big jump or that she would chew on an electrical wire. I also had plastic storage boxes under the bed and I was worried she would chew plastic.

Needless to say, I am going to rearrange the furniture in the bedroom asap.

A lot of people are going to recommend supervising your chin any time she's out, and I would agree with that. Chins are much too nosy, much too crafty, and much too agile to leave alone uncaged for any period of time. They will get into something or they will escape.

My advice would be to watch her from now on.

I agree with Ash...she needs to be watched. You're lucky she didn't injure herself or anything on her run around the room this time but next time might not have such a good outcome. Plan her playtimes around when you will be in the room with her or you can do something in the room she will be in. Otherwise you can move her and the playpen into another room with you. Either way, she shouldn't be left alone when out for playtime...chins can get into a lot of trouble in a very short amount of time. They are extremely curious little critters.

Hi everyone,

Thank you all. I sure did learn my lesson. She will not be left unattended again.

So the other day I set up the play area in one half of my bedroom and moved the cage over to the other half. I took her out of her cage so I could clean and add new shelves and a new pvc tunnel. I figured I would let her play while I was working right in the room.

I start to work on the cage and out of the corner of my eye I see her climbing right up the fencing and over the top, ready to get out. I get her and put her back down. I figure that she will play with her toys if she knows I will just put her back. NOPE Right up and over the top.

I redid her cage with her inside her carrier. I am going to post about safe playtime in another thread. Will also share cage pics too.

Smart athletic little chinny who is outwitting all of her "mom's" plans.
