Thoughts, comments, concerns?

When I watched this, all I could do was cry.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PztTA5EVGQU

This is the description that is on the youtube video:
This is a disturbing but important story of a fatal case of child abuse. It is the case of baby Briana Lopez, who was abused from birth by both parents and other family members. We as a nation must make cases like these nonexistent.
This story has strengthened my desire to work in the social service field. The reporter is Kim Vallez, and the copyright is by KRQE news 13, www.krqe.com
UPDATE:
The mother of baby Brianna, Stephanie Lopez, was found not guilty on the charge of intentional child abuse resulting in death.

She was convicted of child abuse resulting in death and child abuse negligent permit.

She was found innocent of intentional child abuse, because she did not inflict the abuse but allowed it to happen.

Brianna's father, 22-year-old Andy Walters, was convicted of child abuse resulting in death, conspiracy, criminal sexual penetration and two counts of child abuse.

Uncle Steven Lopez was found guilty of child abuse resulting in death, conspiracy and criminal sexual penetration.

Paternal grandmother Patricia Walters and uncle Robert Walters were found guilty of failure to report child abuse.

Sentencing...
Susana Martinez asked for the maximum punishment possible for all of them. Sadly, their sentences do not fit their crimes. It took a jury
of seven men and five women nine hours to find all of them guilty.

Andy Walters, the father, received a mere 57 years in prison and
her Uncle Steven Lopez received only 51 years for sexually abusing
and causing the death of Briana due to abuse and neglect.

Stephanie Lopez, her mother received a very short sentence of 27 years in prison for child abuse and neglect resulting in death. The
Jury decided that she was not guilty of intentional abuse since she
did not inflict the abuse but had allowed it to take place.

Briana's Grandmother, Patricia Walters and her Uncle, Robert Walters Jr each got off easy with only 60 days in jail for failing to
report the abuse and save Briana's life.

Keep in mind that prisoners usually get out much earlier than the sentences given, with good time, 20% of the sentence can be eliminated. There is also parole available.

As each guilty verdict was read, the Lopez and Watlers families
showed their emotions by embracing and crying. The only one of
the defendants to show emotion at that time was Steven Lopez who
is the twin brother of Stephanie, put his head in his hands and started to cry.

When the jury was dismissed and had left the court room, the
defendants then began to show their emotions by crying and
hugging their lawyers who tried to console them. Stephanie and Steven

This is maddening and so sad. Where were the social workers, cops and the community when this was going on? Why did it take this little angel baby dying to make them sit up and take notice?

The only comfort she has is that she is now an angel baby and can hurt no more. As for her parents and relatives, I hope they suffer the days they are in prison and look forward to the day they get final justice for what they did.

Thoughts: nauseating
Comments: those people should die a 1000 deaths the way that little baby did
Concerns: that there are probably more sick people Luke that out there

i was wondering why the story seemed to familiar. i remember this story when it happened, i live in the neighboring city, about 30 miles away.

its horrible that it took her death to re-write the law. and IMO, once they rewrote it, briannas family members should've received those sentences, even if their trial was before the re-write. rob had a few choice words after watching this video...and i think his method of punishment would be supported by all who know about this case (but i cant type it out here, lets just say he was furious).

child abuse like this is so extreme and something that i cant even imagine. bostongirl'schin75, please do not assume that the community or the people surrounding this case weren't affected by this. it was a hard hit for the community of las cruces and the neighboring city of el paso (both cities are linked through so many ways). i remember hearing so many prayer vigils that went on after her death. im glad that Sen. Garcia took the initiative to change the law and was persistant about it for 3 years. i hope that no one ever forgets this sad story. by now, every state legislature should change their laws regarding child abuse. IMO, anything from neglect to physical abuse of a child should be punished with a lengthy sentence. im glad that brianna is now with God, i cant even imagine how her life would be if she was still alive and surrounded by those people.

This is one of the most awful things I've ever seen. It breaks my heart that that baby never knew a loving touch in her whole life. Those people are just plain evil.
To my mind, prison time isn't enough...this world has no place for people so depraved.

Every one of the people involved should be tortured until death. That makes me so angry. The idiot relatives that didn't report it deserve to die, too.

I haven't been so blessed to have a child of my own, but you can bet that if I had a little baby I would kill anyone who tried to hurt her. Her mother was biting her? Where does that even come from? This was a tiny baby incapable of doing anything wrong.

They didn't even have pictures of her at her house. Those people had to have been subhuman... I hate them and I don't even know them, and I really hope that some justice is done in prison. That poor little baby...I hope she didn't suffer too much somehow.

How did the police keep from killing these people themselves?

I don't understand how a woman carried that life..delivered that life then set by and watched it happen. Where were her natural instincts to protect. Just even on an instictual level pregnant women guard even their bellies first..people put their children first. I haven't even met my daughter yet and I know I would do anything to protect her. This is just sick

I think maxium isn't good enough for what they did to that baby. It says in the bible that children are gifts from god. I just don't understand how you could do that to a baby. I have 3 kids all of young ages. Yeah they drive me nut and make me mad. But I love them with all my heart and nothing would become between me and my babies. That story was just heart breaking that poor angel had to go thou that. It said in the story they had NO pictures of her. None of her being happy and playing. But she is with god now. With no pain. And when those people die they will have to explain why they did that to God and he will not accept them for killing that baby. I think Im gonna get off now and give my kids a extra kiss tonight.

I debated whether or not to watch the video, but did in the end. I can't imagine the horrors this baby faced daily...I don't want to know. I can't fathom how anyone could do this to her, let alone know about it and do nothing. Absolutely no value for human life, and everyone involved deserved much harsher punishments. They got off way too easy.

I was thinking about not watching either, but I am glad that I did. No matter what they did to that little girl they didn't make her less precious. It's so nice that they fixed up the little picture of the little angel. The people did get off very easy for what happened to that little child.

All I need is five minutes alone with those people and a baseball bat. Seriously, I would have no problem taking them out of this world.

I did not watch the video, but only had to read the convictions.

This is why I can't say I am truly against the death penalty.

For me, there is some comfort in knowing that child abusers are not treated well in prison by the other prisoners. These people are going to have a very tough time in prison. Jeffrey Dahmer got killed in prison for the crimes he committed on young boys. Even the "bad guys" don't tolerate child abuse. I wonder how long any of these child abusers will even last in prison.

I just can't just can't???
I am at lost of words and the pain, saddness just is too much for me when I see crualty like this, no exceptions.. this for humains, animals, planet.
