Hey! What do you all think about giving a chinchilla grape nuts as an occasional treat? Tonight I was enjoying a bowl while sitting in the chin room during playtime, and the smell of them sent my chinnies on a crazed spin about the room. They then jumped all over me like a couple of begging moochers! They've never responded that way to any treats other than oats. I figure that Grape Nuts can't be horrible for them.... it's mostly bran and fiber...

Thoughts?

Ingredients
Organic Whole Wheat Flour, Organic Whole Grain Malted Barley Flour, Salt, Yeast, Mixed Tocopherols (to Help Protect Flavor)Vitamins and Minerals: Reduced Iron, Niacinamide, Vitamin A Acetate, Zinc Oxide (Source of Zinc)Vitamin B6, Riboflavin (Vitamin B2)Thiamin Mononitrate (Vitamin B1)Vitamin D, Folic Acid, Vitamin B12.

Your post got me thinking. What exactly is grape nuts... So I looked it up. I wouldn't feed it to my girl because of the salt and the tocopherols. I just don't know how their digestive tracts would react. I tend to aire on the side of caution because just not giving a treat is so much cheaper on my soul and wallet then the vet. I would bet the reason for your chinnies react is due to their sweet smell (I love their smell).

Those are my thoughts. I bet others have better info on them.

So is salt bad? The chinchilla rescue I got these guys from had salt spools in their cages.... bad idea for chins?

If your chins are on a good quality pellet and good hay, that is a balanced diet. They don't need or benefit from extra salt.

I wouldn't use the Grape Nuts, but I'm not a huge treat giver anyway.
