I was just talking with a girl who lives next door. She is about 14 and had told me before she wants to be a vet. Today she asked about chinchillas and caring for them. She comes over on occasion to visit Trixie. Turns out, she'd like to learn to care for exotics (or what she called special pets). I gave her one of my chin books and then had my aha moment. I asked her if she would be willing to me Trixie's monitor during the summers. I explained about the heat and power outages and them needing to be cool. So, I am going to give her a key, and will be showing her what needs to be done if the power does goe out while my husband and I are working as neither of us would be able to come home to care for Trixie.
I am really happy at her willingness to learn about exotics.

Sounds like a good scenario - just make sure you spend a lot of time with her so she knows what to do. I would also make sure her parents are aware of this arrangement.

Family IS aware, so that is not an issue..in fact she and mom live with her grandma..and they have had a spare key for a while. She has spent a lot of time visiting Trixie since I got her, but now with the new senario I agree that more time will be needed. Now that I think of it, though, if there were an emergency, I may suggest to her that her grandma come with her to check on Trixie as well.
