especially since GM is trying to sell "no fires or injury!"
Perhaps no one had filed a claim with them.
I think there is more to just contacting them & saying my car caught on fire. I'm guessing they would probably need to check the car to make sure it wasn't caused by something else.

Wow...didn't know everyone was so interested in my personal finances-- Every bank is different, every finance company is different and every LOAN is different...in every state. I PERSONALLY am not REQUIRED to have full coverage on my auto loan for MY car---because of various factors. Again, this thread really wasn't to discuss my personal automobile loans. Maybe a new thread can be started for that if people want to discuss their auto loans and car insurance?

Sensitive much??

This is actually a really important (and interesting) part of this story. Interesting because, as others have stated, I've never heard of being able to finance a car without full coverage. This has NOTHING to do with your financial situation - it's merely interesting since many of us didn't know this was even possible. I've had 3 different car insurance companies (State Farm, Geico, and Progressive), and all required full insurance since I don't "own" my car.

It is also an important part of the story because you are still paying for a car that you can't drive because it caught on fire. If I were you, this would give me more impetus to fight with GM because not only did my car catch on fire, but I wasn't given money to get another one (as you would have with full insurance).

You're right and no, not sensitive just not trying to put my personal financial life out there, whether it's just about car insurance or not. But not having full coverage was my choice and it can have consequences as any driver knows. And just to clear 1 thing up right away, having liability on lien for a car for me was legal in every way. I feel like a few (or none) are implying that I was doing something illegal...not true...just as a side-note.

I appreciate everyone's suggestions...I hadn't realized GM had a "no fire" policy?? That's new to me also. I'm just here to inform about the recall, hoping to save someone elses vehicle. But I definitely appreciate everyone's help in trying to get GM to compensate me. I'll look into what everyone has suggested for sure.

Oh I wasn't implying that it was illegal, I just didn't know that it was possible. I've been through many finance companies and different insurance companies over the past 6 years of owning cars and I'd just never heard that it was possible because I was always required to have collision while paying on a car, whether it was worth $1000 or $20000. Thats the only reason I asked, not to get in your personal information though, just being curious about the law.

I'm glad you weren't implying that. Here's the deal. My parents have been with our family bank for 27 years (not that that makes a difference with anything.) But when I took out this car loan 4 years ago, I had full coverage as it was required. When my lien fell below a certain amount the bank and my car insurance company both allowed me to have liability because a number of variables. However, that car insurance company really gave me no options with my liability--it was plain jane--not cover hardly anything insurance. I'm not blaming the insurance company at all, I should've done more research because there are so many options out there.

Now I still have a car, with a lien, with liability--only with fire, hail and deer accidents added. I was able to be added with my family to their policy and the guy that worked with us was MUCH more willing to find us a policy that would fit our needs. I still have a car with a lien, a type of liability insurance--but it's specially fit to what I need.

I know that most financial institutions and car insurance companies don't allow liability or any type of liability if there is ANY type of lien on a vehicle. But if people are truly interested, ask around. But make sure it's allowed in your state as well, along with your financial institution and car insurance company.

Believe me, if it WAS illegal for me...I would've been fined A LONG time ago because banks and car insurance companies MAKE it their business to double check things like that, there's no 2 ways about it.

Quick Update--I've officially filed a claim with GM, I figured I would give them the opportunity to make it right and go from there. They said it will take 7-10 business days from today to find out what's going to happen. She told me there was no one higher than them to take it, in other words, this is as far as it will go... so we'll see! I do have to say she was extremely nice and pleasant to deal with.

Great, keep us posted, I am curious to know how it goes, and obviously hoping for the best outcome possible. Good luck!

Glad you at least got started, but if you get a negative responce, get her full name, position, and ask her if she has a direct number, and the number for the NTSB handy, Also mention she'll also be getting a call from ________ at your local T.V. station, as they're very interested in the outcome! Bet she remembers someone else to call, and either she, or the other person will call you back!
Some of us know the "tricks of the trade," both ways!
Hope you get a satisfactory resolution!!

Look...noone here meant to dive into your personal finances...you brought it up in your OP. Also, noone here accused you of doing anything illegal when it comes to insurance or anything else in this thread. Now, I will tell you that the attitude in which you have taken with everyone on this thread that dared to comment/ask about the insurance issue is absolutely unacceptable and self-policing the forum is not allowed here (please see the forum rules). Again, the issue of insurance was totally acceptable within this thread as it was in your OP.

I'm glad you cleared that up Amanda. I really didn't mean to have an attitude, sorry it sounds that way...I know it's hard because just reading words can come off crazy-different ways---but it wasn't meant to be an attitude. See this post:
Just wanted to clear up as well, these posts are in no way me trying to offend anyone or accuse anyone of anything. I just have a car loan and previously wasn't required to have full coverage because of factors of my car loan and the bank it's through... I definitely WISH I would've had full coverage of course! Would've saved me a few headaches...but you live and you learn!

I wasn't trying to self-police either...but I can see how that could be mixed up with me trying to verify details, explain my situation, etc. I really was just trying to explain everything--in a non-attitude way. I'm just not too keen on sharing personal details but I did up above ^^^ My point of this thread was to share my situation and warn others of the recall mostly.

Thanks!

Good luck, I hope it works out for you, and I too hope you update us. I still think that's so Murphy's Law that you just had it crushed, but that shouldn't have anything to do with them.

Thanks...yeah, it is kind of ironic/weird that the car JUST got crushed right before this recall came out...but it shouldn't effect anything I don't think. That's just my luck though!
