I have a question at the end of the post, so it's not just a ramble! Haha.

So the boyfriend and I adopted a pair of gerbils tonight off of Kijiji. We hurried up and took them in because the poster said they believed one of them to be pregnant because it looked larger and she didn't know the sex of either; she also wanted them gone asap and posted the same ad twice within 10 hours of each other. It was a spur of the moment decision, but I don't regret it at all!

They are adorable! I've never had gerbils before and always wanted some, so I'm quite happy. However, they are both, thankfully, BOYS. :)

I'm also glad to take them in and give them a FUN cage! They have absolutely nothing in their cage- just bedding and two bowls. Poor things; can't wait to let them have some fun! They look so bored, just laying in a corner; yet, they're very social.

My wonder though, and main reason for posting, is this: one of the gerbils (I have yet to think of names...) has a patch of very short, rough looking brown fur on his stomach. It doesn't match the rest of his body- he's albino. I'm very confused. Is it just the way his fur is? He doesn't look unhealthy, just bored. His eyes are bright and coat looks fine, as does the other one. It doesn't LOOK like a fungus. Perhaps I'm just worried over nothing, but like I said, I've never had gerbils before.

Thanks for any insight!

After some research, I believe this patch could be where his scent gland is?

Other than that, anyone have some interesting gerbil names? :p

sounds like the scent gland - that's how they recognize each other, and often they will get tumors there in their older age. I had only girl gerblets, and none of mine ever got the tumors there, however.

this site is pretty informative http://gerbilforum.proboards.com/index.cgi

Yes, thank you. :)

That site was VERY helpful, and yes, the patch I was referring to is the scent gland. They had an awesome picture on their forum.
