im pretty sure my chinchilla has a fungal infection because she is missing fur around her nose.
i bought some betadine solution to clean it.
what is the best way to apply it?
any other tips you can give me?

Is betadine an anti-fungal? From what I searched online, it didn't look like it.

You'd want something that's an anti-fungal. I suggest blu-kote as it works for fungus, but will stain anything it touches.

You can mix 2 tablespoons of dust + 2 tablespoons of anti fungal powder and give this bath every day for 7 days. In 3-4 days you should see fur growing back. And do not forget to disinfect the cage, you can use hydrogen peroxide.

Just as a note, it MAY not be fungal. A lot of chins wll remove the fur on their nose by rubbing it raw by sticking their noses through the cage bars/chewing cage bars. Why not show a pic?

I was searching online and one website told me to buy some betadine, it's a topical solution.

It's a terrible picture, but the area around her nose is dry, red, and scaly.

Okay, I found another site that says betadine is anti-fungal, but I've never heard of anyone using it on a chin? I assume though since it's safe for hospital use before surgery it's okay on chins? I don't know.

Betadine is an anitiseptic used to clean scrapes, cuts and punctures and to prep for surgery. It is Povodine-iodine. Iodine should not be ingested so I probably wouldn't use it around the mouth or nose. It says on the bottle (which is right next to me) "if ingested, seek medical attention right away.

I don't see how it could be an anti-fungal nor have I even heard that it is anti-fungal. If your chin has a possible fungal infection on its nose (which is sounds like it is), then go out and buy some Tinactin foot powder and mix it in with the dust or some Blue-Kote which you can find at any feed store. Much safer and it is for sure an anti-fungal. But please, keep the Betadine away from the nose, eyes, and mouth.

Just remember, with Blu-Kote, don't get the spray version, and use a Q tip rather than the supplied dabber to apply it to the area.

good to know! I hadn't heard of it really before. I think the thing that I saw that said it was an anti-fungal is not just regular Betadine? It's called Betadine Microbicides? But anyways, if it says not to be ingested then definitely do not use it on your chin because it will try to groom it off.

I prefer blu-kote over the tinactin, because blu-kote you can apply directly to the area. And the one time I did use tinactin, my chin got an eye infection from it. But that's just my experiences.

You can get tinactin cream to apply to the affected area. I like using that when the fungus appears to have gotten a little deeper into the skin. The tinactin is great because it will knock out mild cases of fungus (like the athlete's foot type) in less than a week with very minimal work. It would probably work for this chin pretty well. The tinactin works really well for outbreaks on the nose or feet since the chins tend to get more dust on those areas.

Any Betadine product contains iodine whether it be the normal kind or an antifungal kind, hence the "dine" part of the name. Iodine is toxic if ingested. I would still not use any Betadine product on a chin as they will groom it off. Rather play it safe than sorry. Plus, it will stain worse than blue-kote and probably never come off.

I wasn't suggesting using the betadine, I was just saying where I got the anti-fungal portion of my post. I would use blu-kote just because it was made for animals and is safe if ingested. Tinactin cream can also be harmful if swallowed.

I know what you were saying. Just letting the OP know

Betadine is used as an equine anti fungal. IMO I don't think it works for them either, but some swear by it.

When treating your chin with a liquid you need to rub it into the area missing hair and 1/2" up into the surrounding hair, which is where the active ringworm is. Try not to get blue-kote close to the eyes though.

I also wanted to ask - i bought some tinactin. is it okay to digest?
is there an easy way to apply it?

No help, but is your chin up on craigslist? I was browsing today and there's one with the same name as yours and looks like it too! she's super cute. sorry if it's not yours, but small world if it is haha.
