My 6 year old male chin is a major fur chewer! It is so frustrating! I have toys and chews and a wheel and still he chews...he is not alone, he has another male buddy. They were introduced when they were babies and are 6 months apart. They absolutely adore each other, have never fought, they even sleep in the same hut (which is big but not quite big enough for them both ;) ). So I know it's not loneliness...boredom maybe?? Can't imagine that being the case he's got so much to do...so whats the problem!!! They have a huge three level cage, live in my room which is very quiet, and aren't subjected to a lot of stressers. But he still chews! Could it be genetic? I got him from a breeder up by New York. I'm thinking it has to do with them...I should have walked away when I was brought into a small smelly room with two small cages that were filthy and had at least three or four chins in each. But I was young and just drove three hours to pick him up. SO could it be bad breeding? Learned behavior from the mother? Also when I got him his ears were all chewed at the edges. Don't get me wrong he is a beautiful boy and has the sweetest temperament.

Some people do say it can be genetic. It probably has nothing to do with boredom, it may just be something he does. Much like some people chew their nails without even thinking about it. Nothing really wrong with him, it's not hurting him, so just love him with his buzz cut!

I rescued a chin who started as a fur chewer, and stopped as soon as he was settled in our home (within a month). Then I have another furchewer who is paired with a friend and is just as spoiled as all the rest of them. But he still chews and always will. Sometimes they just can't stop themselves from wanting that cooler haircut!

I know what you mean about frustrating. Mine is a fur chewer and I'm always wondering if it's something I'm doing. So far with better care, her fur is starting to grow back. I just hope it grows back all the way. Which is possible, but I kind of doubt it will happen. We'll see, I guess. I've heard it can be due to genes, habit, stress, or poor diet. It sounds like yours is due to genes or habit, though.
