So here's just something that I think is super-cute/funny...
Sometimes, I won't have time before work to give the hedgie cages a good cleaning (i.e. wash wheels, change paper) and I know I won't be home until after 8 pm (hedgie wake-up time). So I just change the food and water so if they wake up early, they'll have something to eat and clean water to drink. Spike will wake-up regardless of what time it is as long as it's dark. Once dark hits, he knows it and will get up. Jack on the other hand, seems to have no clue what light and dark mean. I think it might be because of his reduced vision, but whatever the case may be, he will not wake up just because it's dark. His cue? Mommy cleaned my wheel. Usually I clean the cages in the evening around 7 or 8 pm and when I do, Jack comes out and looks for the food that I just put out and soils the fresh paper that I put down. If I don't clean the wheel until 9 or 10 or 11 pm, but there is fresh water and food out, he'll only come out at whatever time I clean the wheel. I have been testing this to see if it's really the cleaning the wheel/changing paper cue. Today, I know I'll be going out in the evening, so I just cleaned the wheel and stuff. It's 2 pm--- he just woke up. I've seen him wake up and eat a little something with a dirty wheel in the cage, and he'll go over to it, sniff it, decide Mommy hasn't cleaned it yet, so it's not really time to wake up and go back to sleep.
Interesting, no?
