My dad has a big piece of Formica in the garage, he thought he could make a cage out of it, and I don't want to be picky but I do want to know if it's safe, it will be for the back of the cage so I don't think that they could chew it too much...

And also, if we put a piece of plywood (I know it's not safe) on the top of the cage where they couldn't chew on it unless they were chewing it from below and they could chew on it on the sides just from below it...if that makes any sense. Lol

Formica is pretty much plastic and is also related to melamine, which people do use for cages. I would say it is safe if the animal cannot chew it.

Same goes for plywood, it is bad if they chew on it. Some wheels are made with a plywood back but chins can't get ahold of it so it is safe.

Those materials on their own are not safe.

Having said that I've built many cages and now a set of runs out of plywood. They've never chewed on the walls/floor/ceiling of any cage I've built regardless of materials. Some of mine are now over 10 years old. I do provide alternative wood material (pine/pecan/apple) for them to chew on.

Ronda uses formica in the bottom of the pans that have holes rusted in them. As far as I know the chins have never offered to chew it, probably because it's difficult to get to.
