Okay you guys, Tim agreed to buy me a cage and he said he wouldn't mind getting me a FN 142, and I did a search in here, but I have some questions before I get it.

Okay, so I do know to take out the ladders, but my questions are: does the shelving that is in the middle of the top and bottom part come out, or do you have to leave it in. Also, what do you FN people do [because the bottom of the cage isn't high] to keep the poop from flying out of the cage. Also, I don't want to use fleece with Bo because he does chew on it and to me i don't want to chance it if he does swallow it, and with low bottoms I won't be able to use KD pine, so would it be okay to buy some marble floor pieces and just put them in the bottom, and is the bottom sturdy enough to hold that marble floor pieces? Are they hard to clean?

I think that's it.. If you guys can answer these questions I would really appreciate it, and if you have any other insight that I didn't mention, good or bad, please do tell..

Thanks all,
Jean

The shelves are very easily removable, and are actually adjustable to different heights as it is. If you so choose, you can also take out the middle, but that decision has to be made while assembling the cage (you'd have to take part of the cage apart to get it out later). For us, flying poop is just a fact of life :)) Many buy taller metal pans from Bass Equipment to help keep bedding/etc in. Not sure on the marble tiling, but cage cleaning is super easy, since the cage doors open all the way. I would definitely recommend the FN

We got one recently and kept the middle and ladder off. I left the shelves in but made fleece covers for them because my boys would chew them. I had a friend at work make me a pan in our sheet metal shop but you could always buy one. I had the plastic one in for three days until the new pan was ready and they made a huge in hole.
Cleaning is a cinch. Vacuum everything, some vinegar spray, so much easier than wood. And plenty of room for ledges and toys.
Our stills needs more ledges for hopping but when we get to it and finish they will love it.

Oh and it is harder for them to get out because it is higher. Our old cage was like open door, chin runs right out.

I have metal poo guards on my 142, I also put down a piece of plexiglass with vinyl flooring on it and put a marble tile on that, works like a charm and makes clean up SUPER easy.

I keep my shelves in. One of my chins really like bouncing around and I keep it there so she doesn't hurt herself.

As for the poo, I have the bass pans that work like a charm. For the most part, it keeps the poo in. Only the poos from the add on shelves get thrown out.

I have a couple of marble slabs on both floors of the cage and it holds up perfectly fine. The clean up is easy on the slab. But around the slab is hard to vacuum. You would have to take out then entire slab to clean out the poos that got stuck in the crack.

As to the marble tile question. I find that granite and marble both absorb urine and the smell does not come out....no vinegar, soaking or dishwasher works for that. So it depends if you can/have potty trained your chins. if they never pee outside a dish with shavings, then you're all set. Mine are trained but occasionally (I think when they get really into eating over the trough) they spot a tad here and there outside the shavings dish, but I decided to use glazed ceramic tiles (the kind that look like fake slate) and those clean up decent. I replace the set of them once every 6 months or so, depending on smell.
