I am sending my sister home with one of our chins when we all go to Michigan for my brother's wedding. The chin will be six months old, and be flying from MI to Oregon. I have no idea how to go about this.

Does anyone know how expensive it is? Are they allowed on-board? How do chins handle long flights like this?

I flew from CA to FL and back with 2 chins pre-911 and it was 110.00 per chin round trip in the cabin of the plane, they did fine. I would not ship a chin during summer even with climate controlled cargo area-a member of CNQ had 7 chins die on the tarmack when she shipped during the summer.

it costs about $150 for a one way flight with chinchillas now. No airlines will allow them on board, they have to fly as cargo. Chinchillas usually handle flying very well, but like Dawn said, I wouldn't ship in summer because the chins and their carrier are set on the tarmack for several minutes. Plenty of time for the chins to overheat.

You don't have a choice in shipping now, they won't fly them cargo unless the ground temp is under 78 at depart, destination and all layover sites.

Also, you'll need health certs on top of the ticket. It's very expensive to ship a single chin.
