We got this flying saucer for our two boys, but they hardly use it. They get going really fast on it and then it starts moving on them. Any ideas how we can weight it down so they will use it more? The base of the saucer is hollow. We didn't really want to get a metal saucer because we heard they can have sharp edges. Here's a picture of the saucer that we have: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2751781&lmdn=Product+Type

I haven't tried either saucer but since you know your chins will use it, I'd suggest investing in a metal one. The edges should not be sharp, I've never heard of anyone having issues with them except for the chin not using it. Also the one you have is much smaller than the metal ones.

We have a large one. The picture that I posted is a medium size saucer. I heard most metal saucers have sharp edges. Who makes the saucers without the sharp edges?

Pet stores tend to sell products with a chins face on it to make it seem it's chin safe but honestly, those plastic saucers are pretty crappy. I would suggest you not use it as it could be an accident waiting to happen with your chin as well as them chewing on it and that would not be good either. I haven't heard of the flying saucer having sharp edges and I personally have a chin spin that I got from qualitycage.com. They also have flying saucers there as well.

I don't know of any chin that will use those cheap plastic flying saucers. Even if you don't consider that the chins will chew them and ruin them in no time - chins DON'T use them. On the other hand the metal ones from 'chillas.com' most chin use them a lot and they last a lifetime. They are expensive but considering that they really do last a lifetime they are well worth it.

The standard saucer is made for chinnies :)

I agree, those plastic saucers are crap...I couldn't imagine a chin being able to use one.

There is only one company who actually makes a "flying saucer" as it is a brand. They are not sharp anywhere, sounds like someone making an excuse just not to spend the money and buy something cheaper ( whoever said that, not you )

I had one, my girls loves it so much they literally ran on it until it feel apart... and then still tried, lol. One day I'm going to try to find the time to put it back together for them, but probably need to order new bearings first.

Riven's reco-chin-dation... highly recommended

I have owned 4 Flying Saucers, and not a single one has sharp edges. The metal one is a fantastic wheel and will least you for as long as you own your chin. Because of this, it is well worth your money.

After spending a small fortune on numerous less expensive wheel/spinners, I finally bought the flying saucer from Quality Cages five years ago. All my chins have loved it, used it extensively, and it's still perfect. A huge savings in the long run.

One word of advice -- when you first install it, pull up a chair and watch them figure it out. Till they figure out how to use it properly, it's a total comedy act with chinnies flying everywhere (but no one gets hurt).

Its been said over and over again, but I would like to add that I too have never had a problem with my flying saucer wheels as far as the sharp edges go. My chins that use(d) them always loved it once they figured the darn thing out lol

I will add that I also have never heard that flying saucers have sharp edges. I've had some of mine for 5 years of use and abuse by the chins and they have suffered no damage from chewing or otherwise. I have to agree with Melody that watching them learn to use it is hilarious.

what wheel do you guys recommend-the flying saucer or chin spin. Currently Phoenix is using my mesh wheel from Dr. Foster and Smith because it used to be my hedgehogs and the previous owner told me that she loves to run and that's the best I can do for her right now but I just bought a FN cage so I would like to buy her a new wheel when our taxes come back but I don't know which one to get and where.

Thanks Everyone :chin1:

Thanks Addictedtochins. It seems like its a toss-up. Can the chin spin cause back problems?

I like the chin spin because I know Phoenix is going to use it right away.

I like the flying saucer because she can really stretch her body out, like someone mentioned before.

I guess I will get Phoenix one or the other and if she doesn't like it am I allowed to return it and get my money back?

Sierra:hmm:

The Chin Spin is large enough that it will not cause back problems. That is why it is recommended to get a chin wheel 15" or more, because they are large enough to not hurt their backs.

O Ok. Thanks girl. You have such cute babies! I wish I could get Phoenix a friend but I can't bc my fiance doesn't want to get anymore. :(
