Chinwawa
Besotted Chinchilla Lover
Hi everyone, I am a new chin mom to a white mosaic female who is about 18 weeks old now. She is totally tame and has never been afraid of me. I have been able to hold her and let her climb on me but I delayed letting her out to play until she learned to come to me for treats.
We have had 3 play times in my bedroom. I put up metal gates so she cannot get out in the room or under the bed. I have a big old arm chair that I pull up to the cage door. I put out one of those crackly ferret tubes on the floor and have some treats ready. I use the treats for bonding and for rewarding her when she does what I say.
I have had so much fun watching her gain confidence. She has learned to jump out of her door on to my lap. She eats treats and lets me pet her. Very gradually she has hopped down on to the floor. She returns to me just like a baby learning to leave "mommy".
The first time she was timid. She came back to me quickly to return to her cage. The second time she explored the floor more and had fun making sure she could return to me and go in and out of the cage on her own.
The third time was a BLAST. She is learning to come to me when I call her. She had the best time racing around, running up me and bounding back into her cage, racing around and then running back out. She scooted through the tube and did sideways jumps against the gates.
When she ran into her cage I closed the door on a good note.
