I'm looking into going to a career center for my phlebotomy certification. It's been a year since my last course (I had dropped out of the school I was in due to numerous reasons) & did not get certified in the allotted amount of time for the school. Now, I am stuck with school loans from that school & cannot get financial aid from the center I am looking at.

I was wondering is anyone knows somewhere to get financial aid for school that isn't directly related to any certain school.. if that makes sense. I'm looking for something I can pay off while in school, but if needed, payments can continue on once I am certified.

I don't make enough money right now to pay the monthly payment the school wants, pay my bills, support myself and my chinchillas. Plus, once I am actually in classes, my hours at work will drop and I will be making even less.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I ALWAYS fill out the FAFSA as soon as I get my taxes prepared prior to sending them in. I usually qualify and get grant money and darn near always get subsidized federal loans that way as well.

I got this from the site.

Federal Student Financial Aid deadline (which is FAFSA) aren't up yet. But theres no funds left. I got my letter in the mail today saying that.

State Student Aid deadlines vary. State Student Aid is different than FAFSA. Like Kentucky student aid is called CAP.

searchand_dstry you still have time to file you State Student Aid.

wow I had no clue they were out of funds!!! I just got an award letter, there should be student loan money available I would think since it goes through a lender, fafsa ge ts you the student rate which is lower than other loans and you don't pay till after school.

fastweb.com is a free scholarship/loan/grant money. It's pretty nice, you end up writing a lot of essays on why you should get the money or whatever but can pay off. It's also a real site (not scam)- I've had a number of schools refer me to there.

I just happened to fill out my FAFSA tonight. They better not be out of funds-- I need money to go back to school!

hmm maybe you can find something useful on sallymae?

A friend of mine filled his out tonight too. I needed money to go to school, but I got a letter in the mail saying I was eligible but they were out of funds. I'll get the letter and scan it tomorrow for you guys if you all would like to see it

They are not giving out loans at most companies right now. I got VERY lucky and finished law school just in time considering I need about 30k in loans a year. I have 4 different loan companies and 3 of them flat out are not lending to anyone. I thought you could still get the fed. stafford loans...but may be wrong. It was my private loans though that are harder to get.

KY's STATE aid has run out - however FEDERAL aid has not. PELL grants are federal and need-based and given based on how many people file who are eligible. KY's CAP grants are also need-based, but the state has run out of $ due to the increase in number of people who are eligible.

Anyway - you may want to read this article that was written in my university's paper regarding this. http://media.www.wkuherald.com/medi...sa.Applications.Filed.Increases-3719075.shtml

And yes - I filled mine out on 3/26 (the VERY day I got my taxes back from my CPA) and I got a letter from KHEAA (Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority) yesterday saying exactly what Boo-Boo was saying.

Here's the wording of the letter:

The Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA) received information from your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Based on that data, you meet the eligibility criteria for a College Access Program (CAP) Grant and/or a Kentucky Tuition Grant (KTG). However, grant funds are limited and are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis for the entire academic year. Your FAFSA was processed after all state grant funds were awarded.

(Part omitted)

This denial of a KHEAA Grant does not affect your eligibility for other state or federal financial aid. For priority consideration, we suggest filing your FAFSA by March 15 each year.

KHEAA administers other student aid programs, including scholarships, work-study, a savings plan, and low-interest Federal Family Education Loans. You may visit KHEAA at www.kheaa.com or call ********* for information on these and other aid programs.

KHEAA wishes you success as you pursue your higher education goals.

Well, I can't get anything through SallyMae, I know that 100% because I already have $6,000 out in loans w/ them right now. That's why I am having trouble getting anything. I'll try FAFSA but I am very hesitant to do so because at the school I was attending before, I was always denied. For some reason (credit maybe?) I was only able to get grants/loans with my parents involved & they already made it clear that they do not want to help out with school loans/payments.

I'll try again though just in case since I wouldn't be attending until September.
