I am wondering if I can get several opinions on filtered water for chinchillas. I was told by a very large, well known breeder that it is okay to give chins water that is filtered through your refrigerator. After reading several threads where this issue is debated back and forth, I cannot find a clear answer.

I know they are supposed to have filtered water - but does the filter installed in a refrigerator and changed regularly clear everything that a chinchilla should not be exposed to (ie. giardia...)?

If this is not an adequate filtration system, can some of the smaller breeders out there tell me what they would recommend for a herd of approximately 30-50 chinchillas.

Do you know what kind of filter it is (brand name or manufacturer)? You should be able to find out what the filter is actually filtering either from the box or by looking it up online.

We have a pur filter on our kitchen spout - we fill gallon jugs of water to take to the chin room. If you had a faucet in your chin room then you could just fill your bottles under the faucet. We also use the filtered water for ourselves.

I have a Pur Stage 3 filter for my Whirlpool refrigerator. I took a look at the filter and it states:

Stage 1:
Added layer to trap sediment
Stage 2:
Activated carbon microfilter for contaminant reduction also removes 99.9% of the microbial cysts, CRYPTOSPORIDIUM and GIARDIA
Stage 3:
Filtered over natural minerals for a crisp, refreshing taste
