Hello!

I noticed that my chinchilla has been having alot of 'eye boogers' (The sticky things in your eyes when you wake up) and she has constant wetness on the fur around her eyes and because of that she has little less fur there. She isn't bothered by it or scratching her eyes so I think it's not that of a big deal, but I'm just a little concerned about it as she didn't have that before.

Thank you for all your help!

You say eyes...it's both eyes, and not just one?

I would go to the vet and have her checked for infection, as well has have a dental exam since she doesn't seem to be scratching her eye/s. Tooth problems can cause weepy eyes, as well as eye infections.

If it's not an infection, and the vet doesn't diagnose anything else pay attention to her dust bathing habits. Do the "eye boogers" occur more after she's had a bath? I've heard that chins can be allergic to some brands of dust. Maybe someone with more experience on that could tell you if weepy eyes are a sign of an allergy? I know that humans get runny eyes sometimes.

Sorry to hear your chin has eye discharge.

You can try making the eye wash ( start with mild tea). Herbs to use are eyebright ( eases the discomfort, anti-inflammatory), goldenseal ( antimicrobial), calendula.

Make sure tea is free of particles and do not forget to wash your hands before and after. It's important to use organic herbs, especially eyebright.

Internally offer goldenseal and echinacea ( small pinch for 5-6 days).

Also offer some alfalfa hay and rosehips.

Most of the eye problems respond well to this treatment. If you do not see improvement, thorough exam is necessary to find the cause of the problem, please see a vet.

Hope your chin gets well soon.
