Eye infection and behavior

Hello I am relatively new chinchilla owner and have a question about mine. My chinchilla would randomly wake up with crust or what I call sometimes 'sleepys' in his eyes. It doesn't happen ever day but only on occasions. I wondering if this is related to his behavior. He is not very social with me or other chinchillas. I let him out everyday to play for at least an hour. I try and pet his and win his affection with treats but nothing I do helps. I have had him for 8 months and he has yet to warm up to me. I am not sure if that is just his temperament or there is a greater problem and his eye has sometime to do with it.
