My hubby and I are having problems with ants in our house and so someone is going to come look at it tomorrow- my question is if they decide to bomb the house (I would obviously take my dog and chins out in their carrier) will their cages be okay after the bomb? Should I cover the cages with a blanket or something?

They're mainly in the kitchen and the chins are in the living room which is next door. The only reason I'm scared they'd bomb is because where I live (in an apartment) we have to call the main office and they have like a handyman that does everything, it's not a professional exterminator He's bombed the house before we got the chinchillas.

Can you tell them you would prefer that they didn't bomb? I don't think a bomb would take care of ants. There are things you can buy to put out in the kitchen to get rid of them. We've used Terro products in the past with success. You can put them up where the dogs can't get into them, and just keep the chins out of that area.

If they do bomb anyway, I'm not sure covering the cages will be enough. You may still need to throw out any toys and sanitize any wood that they could chew (ledges, houses, etc.).

Yeah I'm sure I could ask they don't bomb it and get something else. And if they need to anyways I can either do as you said and throw out and sanitize or just store the cages in my car until it's safe to go back inside. Thanks for the advice!

i had ants really bad 2 years ago in my apartment. Maintenance also takes care of all the "exterminating", so I called the main office and told them I would just like them to spray the outside of the apartment as I am very careful about any chemicals around my chins. Inside I used Terro products, one was this liquid that you put on this piece of cardboard, and the rest where the simple traps. I also bought a powder that can be sprinkled. It all worked wonderfully and maintenance never had to come into my apartment and "bomb" it. It was particularly difficult in my apartment as my living room, kitchen, and dining room are all one big room and the chins are in the living room. I'd try a few things on your own before risking bombing the apartment.

If they do bomb, put their food and dust and any supplies you have for them in your car too. I hate bombs. They get all over everything, including your food, furniture and clothes.

we had our house bombed years ago with only a few chinchillas in my herd. They and all their food and wood toys left the house. ANy cages I could move left the house as well and just sat outside for the day (cages not chinchillas) Then the cage I couldn't move was covered in plastic and taped off, then scrubbed when it was all done

Thanks for all the advice and suggestions- I'm hoping that they won't bomb it at all but will definitly remove all the cages and accessories if they do. Hopefully I can have them do as Jen said and spray the outside then get some other products inside.

When I have Terminix come out and do their quarterly service, I ALWAYS remind them of the chins (most of the time I have to tell them they're rodents) and they do something different around them than they do in the rest of the house. When they spray in the house, I have to leave the cats in a bathroom that's not treated, and the dogs go outside until the spray has dried.

We had really bad ant problems where it started in the kitchen and ended up getting all the way upstairs to my parents room. I shut the door to my room where my chin is and we sprayed down the kitchen. There's also this product that comes in a giant pump that you can use to spray the baseboards inside the house and the perimeter outside the house. We did this in every room except mine and all along the outside of the house, and repeat it twice a year. We haven't had an ant problem since :thumbsup:I'll try and find the name of the chemical if you would like, I've seen it on tv commercials before...

Yeah Chibigirl if you know the name of product that would be great! Ants are so annoying.
