so, i have a new baby who was born a couple days ago. it (the sex is unknown still) is in the pet store with its mother until it is fully weaned. i want to know preparation and supplies information i need. thanks!

Just curious if the pet store is breeding? It sounds like a "proceed with caution". She could have inherited Malo or heart problems. Chins pregnant at a pet store are never a great situation.

Ditto. I wouldn't trust anything a pet store breeds. They are usually into numbers not health. Where are you located? There are many good breeders and rescues.

im in san francisco bay area. they look really healthy. i have seen them and already paid for it! they are breeding. i met the father and the mother. the pet store also knows a lot about the animals. i spoke with a fellow chinchilla owner. they offered great advise and much concern. they are a family based pet store so not any petsmart or petco. i went to petco and looked at some supplies...they didnt know ANYTHING about any of the animals.. so i know i can trust this store! i just need to prepare my house and myself! i am sooo excited :))

Welcome to the forum. It's good that you are here asking questions and preparing yourself for your new baby.

One thing I would like to mention is that you can sex a kit from the day that it's born. If the pet store says they know a lot about them and are breeding them than they should be able to tell you if it's a male or female from day one. Get informed as much as you can. Ask the pet store/breeder lots of questions. What are the backgrounds of the sires and dams?

I would expect that you are probably going to pick up the kit at 8 weeks old, therefore the cage that you purchase should not have wire spacing more than 1/2" apart. A kit can easily fit through the bar spacing of a lot of the cages that they sell for chinchillas/ferrets/rabbits. It would be terrible if you wake up one morning and your baby was missing as it could get seriously injured while out of it's cage. Feel free to read the FAQ's on this forum. There is plenty of great info! :))

You can start with this one for new owners...

thank you! yeah i am going to visit the store as much as possible. i called to tell them that i want to familiarize myself with the kit from the beginning! i was going to talk to them when i visit next time. i will ask about the sexing when i get there! its unknown because there are two and i will choose the one for me when i can differenciate them from one another! do you have a list of things i need? i have a lot but reassurance is nice !

The basics are
Baby safe cage with low ledges, wood ones
Ceramic food bowl
Glass water bottle
Safe shavings
Dust/house or dish
Hay, Timothy
Safe wood chew toys, best ordered here or trusted online site

I also recommend finding a knowledgeable vet and source for critical care, just in case.

From the FAQ's... again, a great resource, please take the time to look through them :))

These things should be considered necessities when considering adding a chinchilla to your household.
*Qualified chinchilla vet - in case of emergency, but needed up front
*Safe & appropriately sized cage
*Fresh quality pellets - fed freely
*Filtered water - given freely
*Fresh, dry, high-fiber, low-protein hay - given freely
*At least 2 types of safe, effective chews
*Indoor, temperature/humidity controlled environment
*Environment that is safe, and quiet enough to allow for sufficient daytime rest

*Regular, out of cage time for exercise & bonding - This is more for older chins. Out of cage time for kits (babies) should be limited to bonding only in a safe chin-proofed room.
*Safe exercise wheel for in cage exercise 15" diameter, solid surface, non-plastic - Again, this is recommended for older chins over 6 months old. A kit can burn too many needed calories.
*Quality dust for bathing in appropriate container
*Appropriate & safe cage accessories
