I just read an answer in the chinchilla debate section where they talk about how they should've had an emergency kit and ended up regretting not having one when their chin was sick. I've read about them before and from www.petchinchillas.info, just made a list of stuff to put in the kit.

The website says:
-Pet Pectillin for mild diarrhea
-Acidophilus (with the highest billion count) for digestive health
-Bag Balm for scaly ears and feet
-Styptic Powder for minor bleeding
-Blu Kote for treating cuts, fungus, etc
-Simethicone for gas/bloat relief (but vet still needed)
-Critical Care as a nutrional supplement (food replacement) when chins aren't eating properly

The only one I think I know what it is is the Styptic Powder, but I'm not even sure about that, lol! I worked at a petshop like 9 years ago and when I cut the puppies nails, if they wiggled and I clipped it too short, we put some stuff on that stopped the bleeding right away. Thank god she says where you can probably get these things cause that may not be it. She may have just solved my chihuahuas itchy ear problem, too, with the Bag Balm:)

What else do you have in your kits?! I like being over-prepared! My pocketbook is filled with the craziest things, lol, just like my daughter's bag when we go anywhere! I'm very surprised I haven't prepared an emergency kit yet and want to asap, so anything you put in yours I'd love to know. ALso, if it's 'weird' stuff like all the stuff above, if you could mention where you got it, I'd seriously appreciate it! I want to be prepared if any emergencies pop up, so my boy can have some relief before going to the vet-which is about a 1/2 hour away! Thank you:)

I would not use pectillin, instead I would make sure there is activated charcoal in the kit. I also don't and won't use styptic powder.

I have gauze, paper tape, q-tips, cotton balls, and a small manacure kit (for the scissors).

I actually have had better results witht the Pet Pecillin over the activated charcoal, clears it up in a couple of doses and chins like the flavor. Kaolin-pectin is the ingrediant in the pet pecillin and its safe for chins. I would also add lifeline to the kit.

I must have gotten the wrong brand for my chins then. I used it when I first started out and had chins refuse it or it wouldn't do anything for the diarrhea. What brand do you get?

Peggy, you beat me to it, but I was going to say that if you look over the FAQ's on this forum, you will find A LOT of great info.

Hehe, I think you are talking about me. I have currently:

Info Sheet- Has her regular vet's name, phone & address along with an emergency vet phone, address & directions from my apartment. Also has a record of her vet visits, medications, tests etc and a copy of all her weights.
Acidophilus- grocery store
Activated Charcoal- CVS (had to ask for it)
Antibiotic Ointment- grocery store
Flour- grocery
Q tips, gauze- grocery
Dyne- online (QMC)
Blu Kote- online (QMC)
Oral Syringes- various sizes, free from vet
Coffee Grinder- for grinding pellets for hand feeding, grocery
Essentials For Life- online (tanya)
Molasses- grocery
Simethicone- grocery. It's baby gas drops for bloat/gas.
Apple Cider Vinegar- grocery
Critical Care- Still have it even though I found out she hates it. I should probably give it away or something. Got it online (QMC)
Traveling Case- Not a cage, but a small carrier for when I bring her to the vet down the street. I also have a small cage I put her in if I bring her to visit my parents for the weekend, since it's about an hour drive. I got this with her but I'd think you can buy it at a pet store.
Fleece Cover for Rice-Filled Sock- I made this when she had gas and it worked pretty well. I made it because she was trying to eat the sock.
Frozen Water Bottles
Leftover Sulfa/Trim- This is from when she was prescribed it a few months ago. I asked how to store it for long and it expires in about 10 months, so I kept it. I would not administer it without going to the vet first and asking if it was ok. I just thought I would save it in case I could use it again and save some money.

I think that's it, but not sure because in reality not everything is in one box. Flour is in the kitchen, as is the coffee grinder. Antibiotic ointment, gauze etc is in the bathroom cabinet. CC and water bottles are in the freezer, but I think I remembered most of what I have. There are other things that people have categorized as "emergency kit items" that I have but I don't really consider them emergency items. Like a scale, shreddies, tile slab (it's already in her cage) and things like that.

I use KPAD soothables, just because it is at the feed store I use and the chins dig the flavor. They liked Pet Pectillin also made by lampert kay.

Extra water bottles that have been checked and do work without leaking. Not all chins will drink from a bowl, and I had to buy 3 new bottles before I found one that worked. Why list it here? A chin w/o water is an emergency

Yes, I forgot that. I have two extra water bottles as well.
