Hi, so approximately 30 hours ago my little chinnie was castrated. The vet said it all went very well. I have been checking on him regularly and giving him his medications on schedule.

He hasn't been drinking much water so I decided to hand feed him watered down cranberry juice (sugar-free) with a syringe, which was surprisingly easy and he seemed to really enjoy it.

He has been eating a little bit of hay and possibly a tiny bit of his pellets. I have been checking for poops but haven't seen any so far, should I try hand feeding him some food? or since he is eating a little bit now should I just wait to see if he is pooping. Would hate for him to have/get stasis.

I have never had a chinchilla who has had surgery and although I have done quite a lot of research on the aftercare, I just would like some advice. Thanks.

If it's been 30 hours and he isn't eating or pooping, I would start hand feeding immediately. I would also contact the vet about him possibly developing stasis and find out about getting medications to get his gut moving.

Thanks for your reply. He stared eating shortly after I posted this and he has started pooping again, they are small and mushy but starting to get normal again. He still isn't drinking very much but I am hand feeding him water at the moment as well.

You could get him some Critical Care and do some syringe feedings, just to keep his tummy nice and full. Get some probiotics from the pharmacy, break open a capsule, and add it to the cc mix. It should help his gut stabilise, plus offset the effects of any antibiotics he might be on.
Has he got pain meds? Metacam?
