On the dosage of bene bac the directions say 1 gram per 10lbs. If a chin weighs 1 pound, which is 453 grams and there are 1000 miligrams in a gram, than would the dosage be 100 miligrams once a day for a 1 lb. chin?

I personally would never use benebac, the bacterial count is low, around 20 million and it has sunflower oil, sucrose and dextrose in it, sugar and oil do not do well in the digestive tract of the chinchilla, all it will do it feed the bacteria and produce gas as a byproduct. If you are going to use a probiotic get a human capsule and crack it open over something like oats, the higher the BILLION count the better, I use a 18 billion when using it for treatment. The bacteria need to get through the acidic stomach to get to the cecum and do their work, the more bacteria there is the better the chance of it getting there alive.

I use pet pectillin and a 18 billion count probiotic, never had luck with activated charcoal or burnt toast, or pulling pellets-the kaolin and pectin in the pet pectillin helps bind the poo and sooths the digestive tract. After dealing with bloat and stasis and the work involved not to mention the vet bills, I don't see the point of treating loose poo with sugar and oil with a few bacteria that benepac has, it makes no sense in chinchillas, other animals it might work I don't know but in chinchillas there are better choices that don't involve sugar and oil.

looks like the powdered version doesnt have the oil and sugar in it. perhaps mixing it with a little water in a syringe would work.

where do I get pet pectillin? Also what dosage do you use on that per weight? The probiotic I can just get where the human vitamins are and sprinkle one capsule per day on oats?

I found the pet pectillin at Petco (I can't believe nobody has ever mentioned it to me before). The one I found says it is for dogs and cats, is that the right one? What dosage do you use for chins?

I did a search and found this post from Dawn for pet pectillin

I give 3ml twice a day for a couple of days, as long as it was food/stress related it cleared it right up. If it does not after a couple of days the chin goes to the vet.

The pet pectillin says dogs, cats and birds buts it is just kaolin, pectin and water, its used for other species other than dogs and cats. It works really well and chins usually will take it with no problem. You can sprinkle the probiotic over something like oats, I taste it first to make sure its not nasty tasting and I don't put it over pellets just in case the chin rejects it.
