I wrote Purina Mills a note about my animals losing weight this year with Mazuri. I have always used this product. I order the 25 pound bags from my Ag store when needed. She keeps it in a climate control room for me. I only purchase what I need. ( two bags at at time) I keep it out of sunlight and closed up. Mill dates are fresh.
My animals ate it with no problems. No picky eaters. No throwing feed out of the dish ect.

I did switch the hay source in the summer. No waste there. And offered Oxbow orchard in my hay here and there for variety. No change to apple wood. I cut and process my own. Only change I've made was offering Ryerson's suppliment in late September of this year. Also I was using DryNest pine shavings and the Ag store couldn't keep it on the shelf. So I switched to a local feed store( Southern States) that carries their own brand. I have to travel nearly 20 miles one way to get at a consistant DryNest dealer through a different Southern States store that handles rural farms and not people like me in the city.

My animals had one bag of PANR from the store who keeps the consistant DryNest supply through Southern States. I then decided to go back to my Ag store since its closer. The owner accidentally gave me Professional when she told me on the phone she was in possession of one bag of PANR.

The husband had thrown it in the pickup when I paid and I did not see the mix up until our long drive home. So my change over was a mix of PANR and Professional. I had just changed over from Mazuri to PANR when I ran into this problem. :banghead: I'm changing again with Shoots feed next month because my herd hates the Professional. And I know Purina dropped PANR and went to something else. I just don't know if they would like the new SHOW feed. I've seen some of you write that your animals were throwing it out as well. Grrrrrrrr.......

Last note: I can't find my darned log book for weights. I'm re-organizing my paper mountain around here. But the weight loss was about 5 to 10 grams over several months time and held. That would of been 13 animals at the time.

So in short. Mazuri gave me the weight loss. I started one bag of PANR in October. And then the recent mix up with Professional. Animals ate PANR and are unhappy with Professional.

From Purina Mills:

Thanks for your inquiry about Mazuri Chinchilla diet. In response to your questions about changes in the diet, I can tell you that we have only made one change to the diet in the last several years. In March 2008, we changed the source of vitamin E to the natural source, which is more available to animals. There is certainly inherent ingredient variation over the years - one years crop of soybean meal may be slightly different from the next. But, we test all of our incoming ingredients for nutrient levels (and make sure there are no toxins) prior to using in our formulations, so the overall nutrition is the same in every batch of feed we make.

Are your animals receiving any other supplemental food items? Hay? Did anything else change- like bedding, water etc..? While the animals were losing weight, did you notice a change in feed intake?

I have also forwarded your information about the website to our marketing team so that they can work on this issue.
MY NOTE: PURINA'S WEB SITE WOULD NOT ALLOW ME TO VIEW PRODUCTS BECAUSE YOU NEED TO BE RUNNING INTERNET EXPLORER IN COMPATABITY MODE. THEIR WEB PAGE WAS NOT MADE TO RUN IN "IE8". I am running a very old windows program which is XP. In case someone else was having the same problem, that is the answer. I need to move over to Windows 7 or Linux.

Thanks for your interest in Mazuri, and please let me know if you have any additional questions.

Sincerely,

Liz Koutsos, Ph.D.

I know several breeders that have had weight loss due to Mazuri feed in the last year and have had to switch feeds. The same has happened with Mana Pro Show Rabbit that was always a trusted chinchilla feed. Its getting harder and harder to find a trusted chinchilla feed these days!!
