Last night I had Trixie out, and did NOT bring my camera..needed batteries and all. Anyway, as I often do, I bring myself a mug of icewater..lots of ice. I was reading while she played and suddenly heard a noise from the table next to me. I looked, and there she was, paws on edge of mug, face in, trying to pull out a piece of ice. She was not getting wet, luckily, as it was mostly ice in it. But it was funny. So I took a piece out, and set it onto the table. She manged to get it down to the floor, and chewed happily on it for several minutes.

That is adorable. I have been wondering about giving an ice cube as a toy, too. (Filtered water of course)

I've never thought about giving Shelly an ice cube. I wonder what she would do. My dog eats them all the time.

I have actually given Trixie a single ice cube, or a few bits of crushed ice in summer. I always supervise, and as soon as it starts melting, or she loses interest I take it back.

over the summer i'd give gizmo an ice cube. but id crack it in half so it was small enough for him to chew. that way, it wouldnt melt into a huge puddle if he got bored of it and left it.

i didnt do it all the time but he definitely liked licking it to cool down.

So, I read this thread and thought I would try it out as a cheap, possibly fun new chew toy for Izzie. I gave her just a little ice junk, for safety, and she absolutely LOVED it! She was very intrigued by it at first, but then started to chew on it happily. I guess my question is - is this safe for their dental hygiene? I know that chewing on ice cubes for humans is sort of considered bad dental practice for humans since it can wear down emamil. Anyone know anymore about this?

I know in dogs it causes a lot of fractured teeth...but I don't know how that would translate to chinnie teeth.

My chins love ice cubes when it's hot! I like seeing them stick their cute little tongues out to lick the ice. Sometimes they look like they have brain freeze while enjoying the ice :)

Well, our enamel doesn't regenerate like a chin's. We have low crowns, but that's the part of rodent teeth that keeps growing, so I don't think it would be an issue for that reason. I'd be worried about 1) Wet fur leading to fungus if I didn't catch it melting soon enough or 2) The ice getting stuck to his lip/tongue/widdle chinnie foots (because that's just the way my luck runs :hair:).

I had the same concerns about wetness, that is why when I do give Trixie a cube, I sit right with her, so I can take it away quickly if needed.
