So for the last week or so my male chin has had some on and off white discharge from his eye and today I decided that I would take him to the vet. This is the first time I've ever had to take my chins to the vet and after reading the Vet section here I decided to go with Animal & Bird Health Care Center & Hospital in Cherry Hill NJ. Well after getting there we found out that our male chin isn't really a male.. he is actually a she and the vet said that he thinks he can feel one baby inside her. SO now I will be finding a baby proof cage etc. But my question is he prescribed her Flurbiprofen Opthalmic Drops .03% to give her every 12 hrs for 7 days but he said "he didn't know if it would be safe for a pregnate chin but he didn't see anywhere where it said that it wasn't safe" ... so now I'm wondering what you guys think about that? I don't want to give it to her if it isn't safe for the kit. Secondly he said that a chins gestation (sp) period was around 65-68 days.. I could of sworn I read somewhere on here that it was 111 days. He told me that 111 days were just for guinea pigs. Any information on any of this would be helpful.

Well, the gestation period for a chin is 111 days, give or take a few. I don't know what the gestation period is for a guinea pig but I don't think it's 111 days. If your chin really is female and pregnant, I think you should find a more chinchilla knowledgeable vet. I don't think eye drops will affect the growing baby as it won't be a systemic drug.

Yes, it's about 111 days. When was she last with a male. I don't know about the eye drops, somebody else will answer that I'm sure. Search on this forum about sexing chins, I'm not real sure if that Doctor knows how to sex chins. If you're not sure you could post a pic of her equipment

Thank you for the information- I was pretty sure it was 111 days and when I questioned him he told me it was only 65-68.. so yeah I'm not going to go back there. I've only had her about 3 weeks, she's still in quarentine. She was a CL chin so I don't know when her last encounter was- her owner didn't mention another chin. Mt. Zion Chins- what is the vet in Marlboro? I don't know how far it is from me but would prefer to go to someone who knows a little more about chins.

lisa--me & barb(mt zion) use the same vet. she rocks! wish you woulda asked me the other day when we spoke!
dr janice goode, she is currently working out of the banfield inside the petsmart in marlton.
The address is: 315 Route 70 Marlton, NJ the vet office phone number is: 856-596-5501.
When booking the appointment please specifically ask for Dr. Janice Goode.
tell her me & barb sent you. if you cant make an appt with her, let me know & i will text her. ;)

Maybe before you go to another vet and spend more more plus stress s/he out which you don't want to do if she is pregnant, lets get chinny sexed and I'm sure someone on here will know if the medicine is safe. Did you do anything to learn it's sex yet?

I know I didn't even think about it Mishellyshel! I will definetly go there next time something arrises. But I looked last night and I think the vet was right about him being a her- I had yet to do a hair ring check because of him being so new and didn't think anything of it until he said said something.. I can post pics anyways if someone wants to see though.

try & take a pic & post it. but you have boys & girls, so you should be able to notice the difference.
i only have boys so i wouldnt even be able to tell you the signs of pregnancy (beside the obvious) but i am sure anyone here can help you.
it would also be helpful to know how far along "she" is, as your vacation is right around the corner and as my girl Prissy from Gone with the Wind said " I don't know nothin' bout birthin' babies."

Okay this is the first time I've ever posted pictures on here so hopefully it goes through- but yeah I know about the whole brithing thing- I don't know anything about it either.. I have to talk to you about possibly watching her and her kit(s) if she does have them for about 10 days before that too.. I'm going to Ohio to visit family right before the vacation and was planning on taking everyone with me but depending on peoples advice/opinons I don't know how a kit and her possibly nursing Mama would do on an 8 hr. car ride there and back.. my guess is probably not well. But anyways while at the vet my hubby asked if he could tell how far along she was and according to him (who thinks that the gestation period was 65-68 days) he said that she is past the 40ish day mark because they don't start to develop a skeleton until the 40ish day mark.. but who knows about that. And I have to say Claudia looks kinda grimy in the pictures and I apologize for that.. haha.

While on here- though off topic- how do you get urine stains out of their fur?

i don't have any girls in my home.............and NONE of my boys look like that.

i don't mind watching a mama & her baby............but i would be very nervous about watching a pregnant mom & having her give birth & there be a complication. i would not be able to forgive myself should something happen.

Wow, your vet was confused. Gestation for guinea pigs is 63-70 days. Sounds like he had the two species mixed up.

Also, if your vet was saying that the fetus has to have a skeleton in order to be able to feel it in the abdomen during palpation, he's incorrect. In most species, the embryo/fetus can be felt during palpation even before the fetus has developed a skeleton.

It's okay Michelle I understand about the (possibly) pregnate Mama. I would be/am nervous as is. And Minrex- are you saying that she could be pretty much anywhere in her pregnancy? I don't know much of what you said as I've never had a child. Also do you think he could be inccorect altogether? It seems that pretty much everything he's told me has been incorrect. I guess what I'm asking is it likely that he was just mistaken and possibly just feeling her belly?

There is the possibility that he is wrong about her being pregnant, but I would plan on the pregnancy and prepare for it Better safe than sorry. He was right about her being female, after all.

Oh, and you can clean the stained area with an unscented baby wipe and then give her a dust bath. If that doesn't work, you can add some cornstarch to the dust.

Yeah I'm definetly going to plan on it- just in case. Like you said better safe than sorry. And thanks for the advice to get the stain out! I'm going to have to get some unscented baby wipes.

Definately female. I would try to contact the previous owner and see if they could give you a time line...how long have you had her? Don't poke around on her belly too much you could injure the kit but if you lay your hand flat on her belly and feel movement you are probably within a couple weeks of delivery or less. Usually after I feel movement kits show up not long after...I would buy a kit safe cage asap since you don't know a timeline and start stocking up on handfeeding supplies just in case.

Thanks for all the advice guys.. and I wanted to let you know this morning I woke up to a beautiful little kit. This is the first one I've ever seen and she's gorgous. I had no idea the kit would come this quick. I've yet to pick her up because I know nothing about kits and she's nursing with Mama. They seems to be doing okay. But I'm going to go now and read the babies/breeding section- I'm sure you'll see me posting questions in there haha.
