One of the young males is shedding horribly. He's ebony and has light grey fur sticking out in random directions. He looks like my dark brindle akita dog right now. She also has light tufts and has been dropping fur everywhere. I've heard conflicting info about helping remove the fur on a chin. Some say never brush a chin and others say to comb it out. What should we do?

If they aren't priming too horribly I just pick the tufts out. If they are really priming I use a #3 grooming comb to do a rough groom and get all the loose fur out. Some people say flea combs and slicker brushes work but they have never done anything for my chins. The money for a legit chinchilla grooming comb is worth it.

Marble's fur is so thick a flea comb will not even go down into it. It seems like mine are shedding worse this year than in years past. Not sure why, but I am still planning to order a grooming comb.

Mine are too, Ann. Smudge, Diesel, and Koda especially. Anytime I walk into their room there are hairs flying everywhere. My air filter can't keep up.

I used a flea comb for years. I had a wide tooth comb and a finer toothed one for when they werent blowing their coats as bad.

Mine are too, I have fur flying everywhere, can I use a lint roller? The combs look really sharp, I don't have the confidence to use it cause I have squiggly chins.
About the lint rollers, will they take out the good fur as well? Cause last time I used it on Muffin, the whole piece of tape was covered with fur on the first go, I was scared I pulled her good fur out.

Lint rollers work really well, just lightly sweep it across their fur. Don't press it directly to their bodies. Its amazing how much loose fur will come out with a roller. You would think it would make them bald, but it doesn't.

I've never had any luck with non-chinchilla combs. I could understand why some people would be hesitant to use one without instruction. They're a bit intimidating once you realize how sharp they really are.
