OK, so just a couple of random questions that pop into my head from time to time.

1) My boys have different fur lengths and thickness. Bryson's fur is short, thin and has breaks in it no matter how much I groom him and dust him. He's a pet store chin, so poor quality. Ande, on the other hand, has long, thick and great quality hair. He's a rescue, so I'm not really sure where he came from... Is that normal? Each chin has different fur types?

And 2) I think Mr. Bryson might be an ebony... not 100% sure, but by looking at a lot of pics, I'm starting to think he might be, or he is just an extremely light standard. Ande is a dark standard but has a definite snow white belly. Bryson's belly blends in with the top half of his fur... I'm very confused... Not that it matters, I'm not going to be showing or breeding him, it would just be fun to know what his color is. :)

Here are some pics.

Fur texture really does differ that much. Nyx's is so thick you can bounce coins off it and she doesn't feel it.

If Bryson is not an ebony. His fur does not appear to be shiny and black which is one of the identifiers of an ebony. He looks like a standard to me. Maybe with a little TOV. As you said its short and sparce and poor quality.

Both are handsome handsome boys.

You cannot be a "little TOV". He looks like a light ebony or dirty standard to me. And yes, all chins have different fur quality and types. It doesn't matter though, they are very cute boys!

Both of your chins are standards. Bryson just doesn't have the white belly desirable for a show chinchilla. Standards come in different shades and qualities (fur length, fur strength, brightness of belly, clarity, density, etc.). Both cuties though!

I agree looks standard both..maybe one is an ebony carrier they can have dirtier bellies....They cannot be a little TOV......They are TOV or they are not.

The chin in the first pic. looks like a light ebony to me.
From the articles that were recently published in the ECBC Breeder and the MCBA Mag. that Bob Gunning wrote a TOV is a Gunning Black Velvet/Dominant Beige cross and to use the term TOV in relation to the Gunning Black Velvet isn't correct.
He also pointed out that The Gunning Black Velvet was a created mutation and it is possible for a chin to have the "black mutant factor" and still look like standard except for a little black on the head.

If Bryson were to be shown, he would be placed in the standard class and not with the ebonies because the color does not wrap around his belly. Even a light ebony would at least have a light gray belly. If either of Bryson's parents were ebony, then I would call Bryson an ebony carrier because he could carry the ebony genes but is not fully expressing its phenotypic effects.

Here are some pictures of light ebs from chinchillas.com for reference. You can even see how the veiling on their sides goes down to gray rather than white. Also, on an individual shaft of fur, the ebony's bar is gray like their belly while Bryson's looks white.

He's got a little bit of a dirty belly. He's still a standard. I don't see any ebony showing up at all.

Really, there is nothing wrong with his color or anything. He's a good little boy and a great pet. Nothing else matters! You can have 100 standards all in one place and each one is different in color. Creamy belly, crisp white belly, dirty grayish belly, etc, etc. Dark standard, light standard, medium standard, extra dark standard...etc. :D I have several cages with standards in them and I can tell them each apart because they are all so different.

Ande and Bryson are both standards...and they are both beautiful...in their own little way... :)

I would class Bryson as a light ebony. I'd take them both to show regardless of quality, it can be a fun and educational experience. :))

It's a solid wrap on my screen with lighter points where ebonies are normally lighter. He's nice and blue too, but has a little muddiness under the chin.

I say wrap because it is the same hue as his top coat. A dirty bellied standard will still have a belly line, the fur will be white underneath and Bryson's just fades to a nice even color.

IMO, I would think that Bryson is a TOV light ebony. The first picture seems to show some paw spat. Perhaps, a picture of his paw will help to confirm.

TOV? No, definitely not. There is no TOV veiling at all. A TOV ebony would look like a black velvet without a white belly.

They both look like standards to me.

I don't see any TOV either. I agree that they look like standards with dirty bellies.
