Kay, I can't decide which side of the fence you are on. One minute you seem against it, and then the next you are all for it.

Why does anyone need to be one either side of the fence?

KayKay, I agree with the original question. At times it seems that between chitchat and family life, there is just lots of people looking for answers to their personal life issues. But that's not always, and I often skip over them. I have a lot of drama in my own life, and I try to keep it in my own life, not online. There is nothing anyone online can do to actually help me change my life, I have to do that myself, and since I'm not looking for sympathy I don't usually see the point.

Now.. if anyone wants to hear a full 10 page rant about how I'd dropped a couple lbs in the last week because of my ex... give me a call, check my myspace ( actually I didn't post it there either, lol ) or send me an e-mail.

I personally like to hear about people's personal lives.

I mean, a lot of people watch reality tv, dr. phil, soap operas, etc. (I don't, but they sure are popular!). So how is that any different? Besides... if you don't like it, tough. It's there. The mods allow it an no matter how much anyone thinks that it should or shouldn't be there... it is there.

Why are we arguing about this anyways? It just seemed as though this thread was made to complain about people sharing details about their personal lives.

It wasn't made to complain...and no arguing here. This thread is kind of old...

The thing about this site that is somewhat different from most general animal forums out there is that with chinchillas, there are live animal shows all over the country that many of the members here go to and happen to meet each other person to person. So this isn't just your average ordinary online forum where most people on it do not "know" one another. I venture to say that most, if not very many, of the members of this forum have at one time met in real life, face to face. I know that while I do not have chins currently, I have indeed met a great number of the members of this site (and some people that have yet to join) at the chin shows that I did attend while I was breeding a while back. I have found it wonderful to be able to keep up with them and what's going on in their lives with the sections on the forum that permit me to do so. Otherwise, it's just a general discussion of animals and their care. This forum can be so much more than that if you allow it to be. There are GREAT friendships that can be established and kept via this or any online forum.

I actually agree with Amanda...I do choose not to read some of the more "dramatic" threads, but this forum does have a lot of people that have met and are closer than most forums. I speak from experience as well as far as knowing some on here for awhile.

I guess if you don't like the chit-chat section, you can minimize it and not look at it. Seems like a simple concept to me.

That is definitely an option, however me personally, I like to read some of the threads about other things like school, diets, birthdays, etc.

Personally, I enjoy reading about other people (not just their animals), but it does get annoying when one person makes thread after thread about silly things. I commend the mods on merging posts to prevent this, though.

I like the chit chat section because it's a place to rant about something, and get a bunch of outside perspectives on it. There are a lot of years of experience on this board and someone is BOUND to have gone through similar problems. It helps to get the opinion of someone removed from the situation - it provides a verbal smack upside the head. Some people really need that.

I personally do use this for my animals, but have become pretty partial to some members & like to hear about what they are doing. Its fun to see whats going on all over the world in other people's daily lives. (not just the animals) I've made quite a few very strong friendships via the forum. I never in my life would have expected to have an online friendship, but there are some i talk to nearly EVERY day.

Not to even mention having the animal info, pictures, & heart warming stories provided & i can be wearing my jammies! =]=]=]=]

Of course I came here (well on cnq) first for my animal, bt I love the chit chat section where you can talk about anything, venting off and getting opinions about some things.

I love this site! I've only met Sumiko from on here, but I've talked to many members and purchased many things from the people on here, and I appreciate their advice more than anything.

I don't see how KayKay's thread became sort of a threat, I didn't see any harm or attacking from her side, I just think it was brought up because a lot of normal forums don't have the chance to really personally connect with their online community through the good and bad.
If anyone complains about people posting pitiful threads, I think everyone on here has said no one has to read them, and I don't think anyone disagreed. I don't understand the intention of this thread but I feel it is far from harmful :]
But yeah, I check the site many times a day, well not the hedgie part, but the chin section and the chit chat and games :] <3 u guys
