Our newly adopted 5 year old male was energetically running around the house when he peed and pooed on the floor, which initially wasn't that surprising. However, then he got really excited and was running around chirping, and peed again.

Is this territory marking?

It could be. Or it could be that he just had to pee. Do you have other pets or animals around that might make him want to be territorial? I ask b/c litter pan training can take a while and some chins seem to never get it. I have one that will just pee wherever he is, though thankfully he doesn't pee on the wood or fleece, just any available part of the tile on the floor. The other two will generally use the litter pan, unless they feel the need to claim something/see each other, in which case they'll mark a spot. But that's usually just a drop or two, not a puddle, which is how I tell the difference between.

Hedgehogs can poop and pee more than once in a short time span (unlike alot of animals) so it's probably just normal behaviour. The chirping (if its a soft sound) is a happy sound that my hedge makes whenever she's having fun and happy, so it sounds like he was just having a good time and the exercise brought out the urge to pee and poop.

On another note - he's a 5 year old? That's quite senior for a hedgehog, congrats on his long life!!!

The frequent peeing is one of the most difficult things for me to get used to...Luckily, my little man has litter trained himself, but I probably washed my bedsheets 6 times a week when I first got him...and 5 really is quite a great age! I'm glad he's so happy and healthy!!

Yeah, this guy is partially litter trained (he tries to use the box) and he usually doesn't go on the floor. No other pets. Thanks for your help!
