Standard grays are $125 here. The few times they've gotten a beige, they've been $160, but they sell them on consignment for people who got 'surprise' babies. Only about $50 of that goes to the 'breeder' according to one I spoke with who decided to start selling on her own via bulletin boards and classified ads.

There was a mom n pop pet store where I once saw them for $50. At the Petco/Petsmart (wherever they had em), they were always $150. At Petland, they also had chins, but in colors other than grey, and I think it went up to $300 for a mosaic (the price was based on what color the chin was).

Petsmart and PetCo sell them for $120-$160, depending on their color. Usually Petsmart is at the lower end of that range, while PetCo tends to be at the upper end.

There is also a regional chain of stores that have a couple of locations here in town, and they occasionally sell chins. Usually the standards are $75-100, and the mutations (I've seen white, black, beige, and medium ebony) range from $100 to $150. Often they end up having to lower the prices on their chins because it can take a long time (more than 6 months, in a couple of cases) for them to sell.

Petsmart here is 169-199 for standard. Haven't seen any at Petco for a few months.

Some of the Petsmarts sell chins here some don't. Last one I was in had a standard for $150.00.

Last time I was in a pet store that had chins, they were $150. But we only have one store in this whole county, and they never have chinchillas. (Thank God!)

the last time i saw them at a petstore, the standards were $160 and the 'whites' (not sure if pink white or eb whites/mosaics) were $250.

std greys $99-$129 and mutes $125-$200 I've seen around here.

My Petco must be delusional:

standards: $175
"fancy": $275 psha! (and I have a hard time figuring out what kind of 'fancy' in those wretched colored plastic igloos!) :yuck:

Here, in Riverside, CA, both Petco and Petsmart sell standards for $150 ($130 on sale). Any other color ( usually beige and once in a while whites) is called a fancy and sells for $225 or more.

We do have a small mom and pop shop in town the sells any color chin for $100. They occasionally get surrenders and will sell them cage and all for less.

$169 for standard males at the petsmart here, but I haven't seen any in a while. Last time they did have some they had wood houses and hay but fresh carrots, boo.

From what I've seen at the pet stores here chinchillas go for around $150 to $200

Slightly off topic, sorry
Has anyone else has this type of experience? This was the absolute first for me and I still can't believe what I saw. :tissue:

I've been in that exact store several times. It's quite obvious it isn't fun or healthy for the animals being chased around :(. I also hate how at the very bottom of the "pens" it shows an extremely tiny paragraph on care for the animal. I've read every single one and have never seen one that doesn't say "low maintenance" at the end of it. This paired with the petting zoo environment screams uneducated impulse buys to me. :hair:

Oh my goodness, I see you're from Campbell River! I just moved here about ten months ago and LOVE it. Keep in touch. :)

Some sort of Fancy Chin costs 150$, and the regular chinnies cost 120$, and that would be the Petcetera Pet Store chain...
