I have a chin who has started "drooling" and loosing some weight. He is still very active and eating as usual. He is 4 years old.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Tutter's_mom

It sounds like malocclusion or it could be something stuck in his teeth. The chin needs dental x-rays with an experienced chinchilla vet so he/she can see if the chinchilla's roots are growing into the nasal cavity or into the bone of the lower jaw or if his teeth just need filing or if something is lodged where it shouldn't be. You won't know which course of action is the right one until you know the extent of the problem. If your chinchilla is losing weight then he is probably not eating enough. It is imperative that you get this taken care of right away so that your chinchilla keeps enough food in his gut to keep it moving. Please let us know how it goes!

I think Jean Marie pretty much covered it.

My little rescue boy, MaveRick, started drooling Friday night and i took him to the Animal Hospital Saturday morning as an emergency. By Saturday morning he wasn't drooling anymore and his chin wasn't wet. The vet checked his teeth and such and said he teeth looked fine, and he thinks he just had something stuck that he got out himself. He's been fine every since. No more drooling.
He was still eating, drinking, active, and no weight drops but I took him to the vet anyways.

So defiantly get him to the vet and have him checked out.

Agreed- any time a chin is drooling it should be an emergency and a vet should be seen immediately.
