For just a short stay I have kept my chinchillas in a ryerson carrier for a weekend at shows, they will be a bit resless but fine.

I bought a little critter carrier for the actual travel in the car (about half hour drive). It has two mesh "windows" and zipper up sides. Nice and small and Idgie is just in my lap in it (I'm not the driver).
For the actual time that my sitter watches Idgie at her house while I am gone, I have a smaller cage than the one at my home. I can fit it in my SUV (or sometimes I just leave it at the sitter's house), but it is a pretty good size. It has a perch and then I just take most of the things in Idgie's cage to put in it (so that she has her things). Not just her water bottle and food dish, but her wood house, granite, and a log that she likes to sit on. That way it feels like home, but a little smaller version.
