A girl just walked up to me in the library and told me that she was going to purchase a pair of female chinchillas at a sale barn tomorrow and said that she didn't know anything about them and needed info quick, I just kinda sat there like :banghead: I told her that I would seriously reconsider getting them until she knows more about them. She was persistent though and told me that she was going to get them anyways because they typically go for 12$ at the sale barn and she wanted them because they're so cute and fluffy, all I could think about was yeah they're cute and fluffy until you end up with a sick one, them chewing on stuff they're not suppose to, and escaping.

She's told me stories where her hamsters consumed each other, and how her ferret killed a bird I think it was... :impatient: So I don't really want to encourage her to have them until she's completely sure she can take care of them properly. But I told her that I'd type up some information for her that she absolutely needs to know, but I'm not entirely sure whether I should or what...

I guess I'd rather give her the information and her still get them and actually know what in the world to do instead of pissing her off and ultimately still not knowing on how to care of them. :hair:

Sorry, if this is in the wrong area, please move if it is.

How about you invite her to join this website instead of typing up everything you know. Tell her she can read without joining, but if she wants to join, she can ask questions she may have as well as learn about their proper care.

You can't always help someone if they aren't willing to listen.

Yikes...well I can't imagine that $12 chinchillas have been treated all that great in the past. She's going to need help. You can tell her that you are there to help her. Most people don't listen and will do what they want to do regardless of what is right. So, just make yourself available for helping with the problems that she's going to have. It would be great if she would join here. I just hope that the chins are alright.

Is the sale barn something like an auction?

I usually combine the icky parts like hair ring checks and precision spraying, as chinnychinchinchilla mentioned, with the vital parts of chin care like room temperature and proper feeding, when people ask me 'how to take care of a chin' like it's a simple process. Yes, it makes chins sound like a ton of work, a massive expense, and a huge responsibility... but they can be when you do it right. It's honest, even though it's a bit of scare tactics. If this girl is really serious about keeping chins, she needs to know the worst so she can prepare for it while enjoying the cute parts.

Please encourage her to stop by here and read the "new owners" section. The rescuer I adopted my guy from did the same for me and it's been incredibly valuable... but the hour I spent at the rescue being around chins, seeing the necessities of their care, and talking to someone who has been through midnight vet trips and 3AM feedings helped even more.

Tell her they bite really hard! Show her this!

That's what I told her, that if they're going to be sold for 12$ I doubt they're in good shape. I think it's an auction barn for bigger live stock but I'm pretty sure they're just selling the chins. :/

are you sure it isn't chinchilla rabbits? I cant imaging anyone selling a chinchilla for 12 when you could sell it to a whole saler for at least twice that with less effort?

thats so sad. people are going to see them and get them just because they are cheap and cute. i hope that girl takes your advice.

I hope she does too, she's going to stop by on her way home from getting them and pick up some food and dust. She didn't even have that prepared for them and the sale barn doesn't provide it.

does she at least have a decent cage? i feel so bad for those chins, theres a good chance they are going to have uneducated owners.
