So i bought a cage not to long ago and the shelves are made of plastic so i want to replace them to wooden shelves , it doesn't look like the chinchilla has chewed the shelves but just in case i want to replace them. Any ideas on what to get or where to get them from ?

You can make your own, just get KD Pine from the lumber store and cut to length and put it in the cage with screws and washers. :D

It's a lot less expensive to do it yourself Nick. When you pay someone else, plus the shipping, it can get pretty pricey.

If you really don't want to do them yourself, check the classified ads with the stickied supplier thread. There are a few people on there who make them.

Nick,
If you wish not to do yourself - Please check out www.fortunatechins.com
Carise does a terrific job, even measures to your specifications. She is also very reasonable.
Smiles, still much less expensive to do yourself . Best, Grace

Forchinatechins has good product, but people have been complaining lately that it is hard to get a response and orders are taking forever.

I hate plastic...

How can they put plastic shelves in a cage and label it for any rodent?! It's dangerous, or just doesn't last, or both! It's inexcusable to the people who sell these cages to do that!

This is a fantastic website I love that tells you how to transform any cage into a good chinchilla cage-there's pics, too: http://mistywaterwoman.webs.com/cages.htm

My rats have been in super pet cages their entire lives and have never had an issue with plastic shelves. They don't chew them and they are easy to clean with hot water and white vinegar. I also used to have my chins in super pet cages when I first bought them and they never chewed a bit either. I've used Igloos for the chins and pigloos with absolutely no problem.

Not all chins chew plastic. If yours do, remove it. If they don't, don't worry about it.

nick, i know how to make them, ill show you sometime... like they said, paying for shipping and all that would be a lot more expensive if we just make them ourselves...

yah i just found out that with shipping a $5 shelf turns to $15 , wanna go to home deopt with me this week ? there actuallly really easy to make

I've tried making them myself, but it's a lot of work. I had my dad cut the boards with a power saw, but he cut them too short. Just cutting them a quarter inch too short makes it super annoying because then they don't line up flush with the sides of the cage.

And you have to make sure the screws go far enough into the wood so you don't have to struggle maneuvering the ledge inside your cage. While you're putting the screws in, you can damage the threading on them as well. You have to be careful.

The Fortunate chins website is here: http://forchinatechins.com/

Also, some other sites that sell premade ledges are:

http://www.qualitymutationchinchillas.com/home.html

I've bought ledges from Fortinate Chins and they were all right. If I buy more, I'd like to get the ones with poop guards.
