Hello, a friend gave me her chinchilla over a week ago. I've been trying not to worry, but she hasn't touched her pellets, and is only eating hay. She has been on the same pellets for the 2 years my friend had her with no problems.

Should I give her more time before I completely freak out, or has it been too long already?

What can I do to encourage her to eat?

So no change in brand of pellets. Did they get wet/moldy or did something happen to the pellets that would make her not eat them? If she's drinking water and eating hay, that's a good sign. Maybe its stress from the move? How is her activity level?

She came with half a bag of what she has been on. Mold was my first thought. I checked and didn't see or smell any mold. She had 2 bowls of water that get refilled every morning and I am keeping her hay bowl full just so I know she is eating something. I'm not sure what kind of activity chinchilla's are suppose to have. I had always wanted one, but with how expensive they are, I never got my hopes up.
She stays in most of the day. Comes out to get a drink and to potty. And she zooms around at night playing with a cat ball(I know...weird toy, but I don't have money for chinchilla toys yet). She will come out during the day if I start talking to her. I'll offer a small goodie and pet her as long as she lets me, and as soon as she is done, back to her hidey hole. She comes out if she hears her bath bowl getting moved.
So I don't know how normal that is?

i don't know much since i am a new (have my chin for a week now) so i am not much of a help but my chin hadn't touched her food dor 3 days!she ate only the hay...
now the 2 table spoons of pellets seem not enough...she wakes during the day and eats one table spoon and she eats the second one during the night...she leaves nothing.
Perhaps its stress of new enviroment and change of person?new home and smells and all?
as i said i am a new momma and i don't know much just throwing some ideas
