Hey all,

I've had my Chinchilla for about two weeks now. His name is Geoffrey, and up until today he has not been very vocal. He has made a quiet squeak the first few times I picked him up, but other than that no noise. Today though he's been making noise, which I feel could just be him talking, but I recorded it and thought I would see what others have to say. It sounds like a squeaky toy, and he made the sound on and off for 10 or 15 minutes. He was unusually anti-social during that time.

Link to the sound he's making. http://travisbybee.com/page1/Memo-1.m4a

Thoughts?

He is barking. It is a warning call. He is probably hearing or seeing something that is alarming him. Has anything changed in the room?

I got a new bed....

One of my roommates has a friend over who isn't over very often. Ummmmm, his food bowl fell over today. I think that's about it.

It could be one or all those things. He will adjust. Just so you know, some chins will bark even when they are asleep. Nothing to be alarmed about as long as there is no real threat like a dog or something hanging around his cage.

i think it could be the people over as well. when i first got gizmo, he barked a few times. after about a month or so of having him, my friends came over and watched play time. one of them took a phone call and she talks pretty loud. giz started barking like crazy and it was impossible to get him out from under the bed until they left.

especially since its Geoffreys first few weeks, he's still adjusting. they adjust over some time. now when giz barks, i go to see whats up, and a lot of times his food bowl or water bottle needs refilling. im never sure if its just a coincidence; but when i refill it, he's all happy and bouncy again. they definitely train us!

just spend time near his cage so that he knows he can trust you.
