Hey I have been playing with my chinchilla daily and hes not scared of me or anything because he gets on my shoulder but when i try to pick him up out of the cage he just jumps to the top. so i have had to put him in a smaller guinea pig cage just to transport him into the room where i play with him. does anybody have any advice on how to handle and pick up chinchillas?thank you.

Grasp him at the base of the tail, up tight near the butt, pick him up while scooping your hand under his tummy. Keep a firm hold on the tail and let your hand support underneath him while you transport him to the play area.

Be sure that you grasp up tight to the butt. If you grab at the end of the tail, you will break it off. Also, if you do carry them this way, it does not hurt them and actually seems to calm many chins down when they know they are securely held without mauling or smothering them.
