Hi,
I just really want peoples opinion on what to do. There is a chin for adoption at my local animal shelter: http://www.petango.com/webservices/adoptablesearch/wsAdoptableAnimalDetails.aspx?id=9373962&css=
Her name is Olivia and her bio says she is 3 years old, never had a dust bath, shy, not too sick, may warm up to another chin once health is regained.
Im a person who has a big soft spot for animals in need and this chin looks and sounds like shes in need, and shes sooo close i just want to adopt her.
The only problem is I dont have room for another big cage, im hoping if i adopt her she could live with my other chinchilla sapphire (my 3 year old Rikku hates everything, sapphire was actually supposed to live with her but that didnt work out). Im just afraid that they wont get along and i dont have room to get her another cage. I have a small cage for an introduction but i dont want her to have to stay there forever.
So what do you think...to adopt...or not to adopt...

She will need to be quarunteened before introducing her. And she may never get along with other chinchillas, there is just no way to know

There's no guarantee that the new chin will get along with one of your current chins. And even if she did, they could turn on each other at any time, and you would have to separate them in order to prevent them from killing one another.

So, if you don't have room for another cage, don't get another chin. Because if they do fight, even not at first, you're going to need room for another cage, or you'd have to get rid of one of the chins which isn't fair to the chin.

If you seriously don't have room for another cage what will you do if they start attacking each other? Chins can fight to the death, I'm just saying that you said you don't have room for another cage. Well, with pairs you always have to be ready to separate them if need be.

Chins have been know to get along for months or years and then suddenly turn on each other and fight, sometimes even killing one another if not separated in time.

So, if you don't have room for another cage, you shouldn't get another chin.

And there's no 100% guarantee that they will get along. So what will you do if you adopted her and then she hated your other chin?

Like it has been stated, there is no guarantee they will get along. I've had a pair get along for years and then out of the blue hate each other one day and have to be separated. If you aren't willing to have another cage, then don't adopt her.

If you really want the chin, buy a FN and split it, enough room for two chins to live separate with floor space of one cage.

Hi,
I've adopted her, i went to the shelter and saw her and i couldnt just leave her there. I made room for her, and got her a decent sized cage, but im still going to try to introduce her to my other chin (not for a while though). The people at the shelter were glad i took her becuse they said that they had no idea how to take care of her. Anyway im glad she has a home where she will loved and spoiled!

You will need to keep her away from your other chin for at least 30 days. This means different rooms and no contact what so ever. It's hard telling if she is healthy or if she my have some sort of underlying illness. You don't want it passing to your other chin.
