Well, Chilli was doing well while he was on his meds. He held steady on his weight for several days, and in the last several noticed that he was not eating. We started Critical care Saturday, with much disaster, lol. So we went to the vet, much sooner than we had hoped and we did the x-rays. The good news is that he has no root spurs. He does have more ulcerations on his cheeks, which is what she thinks caused his more recent pain. He has bone loss in his back jaw bone area. Any suggestions on how we can help him? He will need regular trimmings, and will be given plenty of pain meds and monitored for weight loss. Should we give him extra calcium? Would that help him retain bone mass in his jaw? He gets mazuri pellets and timothy and orchard hay.
It is a good news/not so great news.

Missed the edit time on my first post and thought of another question overnight.
Should we also supplement with vit. C?
If we can get his teeth filed a couple time a year, he should be good to go for a long life. However, it looks like he is going to lose that back tooth unless we can get the bone to heal itself.

I am pretty sure that Dawn who had worked extensively with a dentally challenged chin recommended Vitamin C as a supplement for chins with dental issues. I really don't know about the Calcium, I do know you have to be careful with Calcium since too much can cause other problems (kidney stones esp. if a chin is prone to them) while too much vitamin C will just be eliminated with waste. If you could find away to email her (she may be on a different forum?) she may be able to offer you sound advice having gone through it herself. Best wishes for you and your chinnie!

I would try this, this is exactly what I use for my chins. The calcium supplement and vit c.

The calcium is absorbed first to repair the body as it heals, so if your chin is sick or has an ailment, its whole body is not getting the nutrition it needs, as it was explained to me

Any way, here is the link, so you can get some help with it, and also, the lady who runs that site is super sweet and I am sure if you email her she would be happy to help answer your questions.

ETA: Does he have plenty of wood to chew on, and hay to help keep the teeth in check? It sounds like he will really need to be kept an eye on.

Were the roots overgrown? Does he have points on his teeth again?

He may become an expensive pet, as he will need to have an eye kept on him before he gets to the point of having the ulcers. Maybe watch his food and monitor consumption, and that may tell you when he is starting to feel pain with it?
