I noticed today that Douglas has chewed a huge hole in the corner of the bottom tray in his ferret nation cage. I am worried this will make him sick. I have fleece covering the trays, clipped down with binder clips, but he seems to pull them up within minutes. How do I know if he is sick from the plastic? Is there anything I should do?

You should invest in some Bass pans for them. They are metal so they can't chew them and have higher sides so there is less poop flying out.

As for the plastic, most chewing is just chewing and spitting out, not a lot of swallowing. Just watch him and make sure he is acting and pooping normally. If not, take him to the vet.

For the OP, there are 2 places in Canada you can get the metal pans made: Grandview Rabbitry or Sunny Meadow Cages. I've used both and love either place.

Not a problem. :)

As for what he has already chewed, keep an eye on his poo. If he poo looks fine and he's eating, he should be just fine. Most chins don't have an issue, but I had one who did. He ended up getting an impaction from the plastic. Force feeding, gut moving drugs, and injectable fluids later, he did pull through and make a full recovery. While my example isn't the norm, it can happen, which is why most of us don't use plastic in our cages.

I ended up ordering a bottom pan from Flower Town chinchillas...has anyone ordered that one from there before? It is metal, and green on the outside. I have no payed yet, just sent in my order... I

I know someone that did but I don't think you can get the try with the cut out from them if you wanted. I'm sure it would be fine. I've never ordered from them so I can't say though.

I only got the flat one, not the cut out one. I hope somebody sees this that has ordered from there :)

I tried ordering the bottom pan from Flower Town several times (with the most recent order a couple of weeks ago) and they were always on backorder. :( Hopefully they have some in stock now. I was tired of waiting so I ended up ordering a top and bottom from Sunny Meadows instead. I figured it was easier to get both at once anyways.

Allie would also chew the plastic on her liners. Thankfully we didn't have any problems here.

I actually cancelled my order from Flower town, and I am going to order from Sunny Meadows instead. Better price including shipping... can't wait to get it! I was wondering...how do you keep fleece down in it? (for people who use fleece instead of wood chips.) In the regular plastic pans I was using binder clips, but I don't see how it is possible with the high edges...

Smudge got his impaction from chewing on the plastic pan in his FN as well.

Just sitting flat in there, wouldn't they pull them, and bunch them up? I am going to go through that thread some more and check out the pics.
Yes, so far she has been great at getting back to me with shipping quotes and what have you. So excited :) Will somebody have to be here to sign for it when it arrives? I have never ordered anything online...

She ships FedEx and they always leave the trays for me between my front and screen door. Usually within 2 days of ordering.

As for the liners, I don't use them personally and just make them for people. lol I stick with aspen shavings but am thinking of switching. I go through a lot of shavings now!

I have been using fleece for about 5 years now. I have used it for my rats for years, so when I got Douglas last month, I thought I would give it a go! (especially since I can't stand scattered shavings!!) So far, so good! He does not chew it or bother with it too much, other than pulling up the one front corner to chew on the plastic. This will be solved as soon as my new tray arrives :) THANK you SO SO much for recommending her :)
