Well i just got my chin spin and i love it(its huge) but my chinchilla seems to be chewing on the back edges and is kinda eating up the wood, do all chins do that?

Wow, what a naughty chinchilla! I have never had that problem, and I have a lot of wheels and a lot of chins. I would hope he stops, but there is not much you can do but try to move the wheel to a different place or try that bad tasting spray. Otherwise I guess you have to buy a flying saucer! You could sell the chin spin here easily though, so that is good news!

I have a chin spin from quality cage, and my guys/gals chew on the wheel itself. I hate that.

How do your's get to the wood, it's on the back of the wheel.. hmmm.. Unless you have a different one than me.

Good luck with it.

I have the same one unless they changed the way they built it

That is crazy! There really is no solution, as said, if there is wood they can get to- they will chew it. And I think once they do something naughty once, they keep doing it.

i guess i can try the bad taste stuff! I will put it on during playtime, right now its not bad but once she gets something big started that back will last 1 night lol

I honestly, wouldn't try that spray...Chinchillas are very sensitive to anything like that and no sprays/perfume things should be used on them. How bad has the chewing went?

I've actually read that some chins love the taste of the spray stuff so I don't think it works.
Sorry I don't have any suggestions though, I have flying saucers..

That is gross, I can't believe they actually like it [i don't mean that as if you are lying, just saying it's gross, and I can't believe an animal would actually like it].

I accidentally sprayed bitter apple in my mouth once when I was younger. I had a sore throat and my throat spray and bitter apple were both next to each other, I picked it up thinking it was my throat spray, and yes I sprayed it into my mouth. OH SO GROSS!!!!

Haha Jean! I have heard some like the bitter apple stuff too....but that makes sense they are crazy little rodents! Isn't it made out of plywood...and if so, isn't that very bad for them to ingest?

Personally, I don't know what it's made of, I use to use it for my dog [Dillion] many, many years ago, who used to chew like crazy when he was a pup. So it helped to protect some stuff, not much though... lol

Can you take a picture of how you have it attached to the cage? I'm confused as to how the chinchilla is reaching the back to chew it.

I have it attached normally, it looks huge in my cage though, (30x18x30)

I have it pictured above, she is standing on the shelve and reaching around

From the first and second picture it looks different, on the second picture you seem to have it hooked up on the side of the cage, but not in the first picture from what I can see.

But I still can't picture her even on the shelf getting to the wood part. That is the same wheel I have and my chins [and i have two in two different cages] never get at the wood part.

But anyways, is it possible to move that one shelf you say he sits on and reaches around the back of it?

THe side of the cage I have mine hooked up doesn't have any shelving on it. Just a thought.

You can try vinegar...it seemed to deter my chin from bar-chewing, but I think once the smell wore off it didn't really help any. Or you can hope that your chin is just testing out if the wheel is something she likes to chew and will find out it's not all that cool. My chin chewed on the actual metal part of the wheel, but after a few chews he decided it wasn't worth it and left it alone. Give her lots of other chew toys and apple sticks to distract her and hope she stops; otherwise I agree...if she keeps at it, sell it while it's still in a good condition. Good luck!
