Wow. I sure have missed all of you. As some of you know I have been pretty much off line since March. Things have finally started to calm down around here and I am finding more time to get back into the swing of on line life
Here is what has been going on in my life.
Back in March my youngest Son Tommy was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. He was getting sick at random times, always tired, and thirstier then normal. We had all just had the flu and thought he was taking longer to recover then the rest of us. One day he vomited at school and it was tinged with pink. I flipped out (not remembering he had a pink vitamin that morning) picked him up and brought him to the ER. I felt pretty stupid after remembering the pink vit. but was so glad I took him. He sugar level was close to 400. He spent some time in the hospital and our life totally changed.
When he was released and at home checking his sugar levels the first night his older brother was razzing him about having to prick his finger and take needles 5 x a day so I told PJ to test his so he would see how it felt. Well to all of our shock PJ's was close to 400 as well. It was late and we were having our last snow storm of the season so I called Tommy’s emergency Doctor and we ended up putting PJ on insulin that night. It was just so weird.. no symptoms no nothing.
I am also an insulin dependant diabetic but I guess since I was diagnosed 18 yrs ago and have had the same Dr since that time I was on the "old school" meds. I only had to take a 70/30 mix of long acting and regular insulin 2 x a day and try to stick to a certain calorie diet. My Dr was happy if I kept my levels under 200 most of the time. NOW the new way (which I am now on since changing my DR.. along with the boys) is to take a basil (or base) insulin once a day in the evenings and then regular insulin per a certain carb ratio (that is different for everyone) every time you eat. And our goal is to keep our sugars between 70 and 120. It took us all a while to determine what our carb ratios were and to get our sugar levels under control... not to mention learning how to count every carb we ingest and learn to eat healthy. It has been a total life change for our whole family with a lot of ups and downs. Tommy my youngest has had the hardest time dealing emotionally and physically with all of these changes. His sugar levels have been hard to control and He ended up getting 4 E's on his last report card from all of the time he missed and from how badly he was feeling for the longest time. This last quarter in school has been spent playing catch up and getting his grades back up and thankfully his sugar levels are regulating. PJ my oldest has had the easiest time with everything emotionally and physically. He has really embraced the more healthier way of living and has lost weight and has required less insulin then he was first put on. I on the other hand have been on a roller coaster with it all. I feel totally guilty at times that I passed this on to my children and feel at a loss some times trying to figure it all out. It is so frustrating when one minute the sugar levels are great.. then they are high.. then they bottom out and you are doing the same things and doing all the DR's say to do. But things are getting easier and more "normal" (if there is such a thing any more LOL).
Oh and I also just messed up my hand.. Lovely LOL
Anyway that is pretty much why I have been laying low and not on as much as I used to be. My store will continue to be closed for an undetermined amount of time but hopefully I will be able to open eventually. More importantly I am just happy to have things calm down enough to get back on here and reconnect with you all
SO.. what have I missed? What has been going on in your lives?
