Wow. I sure have missed all of you. As some of you know I have been pretty much off line since March. Things have finally started to calm down around here and I am finding more time to get back into the swing of on line life :)

Here is what has been going on in my life.
Back in March my youngest Son Tommy was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. He was getting sick at random times, always tired, and thirstier then normal. We had all just had the flu and thought he was taking longer to recover then the rest of us. One day he vomited at school and it was tinged with pink. I flipped out (not remembering he had a pink vitamin that morning) picked him up and brought him to the ER. I felt pretty stupid after remembering the pink vit. but was so glad I took him. He sugar level was close to 400. He spent some time in the hospital and our life totally changed.
When he was released and at home checking his sugar levels the first night his older brother was razzing him about having to prick his finger and take needles 5 x a day so I told PJ to test his so he would see how it felt. Well to all of our shock PJ's was close to 400 as well. It was late and we were having our last snow storm of the season so I called Tommy’s emergency Doctor and we ended up putting PJ on insulin that night. It was just so weird.. no symptoms no nothing.

I am also an insulin dependant diabetic but I guess since I was diagnosed 18 yrs ago and have had the same Dr since that time I was on the "old school" meds. I only had to take a 70/30 mix of long acting and regular insulin 2 x a day and try to stick to a certain calorie diet. My Dr was happy if I kept my levels under 200 most of the time. NOW the new way (which I am now on since changing my DR.. along with the boys) is to take a basil (or base) insulin once a day in the evenings and then regular insulin per a certain carb ratio (that is different for everyone) every time you eat. And our goal is to keep our sugars between 70 and 120. It took us all a while to determine what our carb ratios were and to get our sugar levels under control... not to mention learning how to count every carb we ingest and learn to eat healthy. It has been a total life change for our whole family with a lot of ups and downs. Tommy my youngest has had the hardest time dealing emotionally and physically with all of these changes. His sugar levels have been hard to control and He ended up getting 4 E's on his last report card from all of the time he missed and from how badly he was feeling for the longest time. This last quarter in school has been spent playing catch up and getting his grades back up and thankfully his sugar levels are regulating. PJ my oldest has had the easiest time with everything emotionally and physically. He has really embraced the more healthier way of living and has lost weight and has required less insulin then he was first put on. I on the other hand have been on a roller coaster with it all. I feel totally guilty at times that I passed this on to my children and feel at a loss some times trying to figure it all out. It is so frustrating when one minute the sugar levels are great.. then they are high.. then they bottom out and you are doing the same things and doing all the DR's say to do. But things are getting easier and more "normal" (if there is such a thing any more LOL).

Oh and I also just messed up my hand.. Lovely LOL

Anyway that is pretty much why I have been laying low and not on as much as I used to be. My store will continue to be closed for an undetermined amount of time but hopefully I will be able to open eventually. More importantly I am just happy to have things calm down enough to get back on here and reconnect with you all :)

SO.. what have I missed? What has been going on in your lives?

Oh, Kelly! What a handful you have. I am so glad you are back, though. I have certainly missed you and even asked Tunes where you were. She kind of gave me the "Cliff Notes" version of what you just posted. I wish you all the very best.

Welcome back Kelly! I was just thinking about you the other day--you were missed! :)

I've had an exciting change--I got more chins. LOL...2 from Peggy, and 2 violets that were from Alecia (dmal chins) but staying at Peggy's.

And one sort of exciting change. My oldest son goes in the Army to boot camp in a little over 2 weeks. It is exciting and scary and proud and terrifying at the same time.

Everything else is pretty much life as usual. Glad to have you back.

Welcome back Kelly! So sorry to hear about your kids, but it sounds like you guys are getting healthy and feeling better. My maternal grandfather and paternal grandmother are both diabetic, and my dad is borderline, so I am always trying to eat good and exercise and watch this and watch that - but it's so easy to fall off the wagon, I'm sure it's even harder if you're just a kid. If you don't get it already, I would recommend subscribing to Diabetic Living magazine. It has some great tips and recipes in it, and other things as well.

Oh, and I hope it wasn't your wood chopping hand! The chinnies will be very upset!...lol

sounds like you are getting things under control. i think kids just have a hard time "not being normal". both my son & i are lactose intolerant (not nearly as life threatening as diabetes!) but when they have ice cream at school or milk for lunch and he comes home with diareah or a stomach ache.........he cries to me "i just want to be normal!"
i try to make sure he has non dairy choices but sometime that doesnt happen when he is not with me. and the school wont adminster lactaid pills without a doctors note.
i hope you have a nice long weekend and take care of your hand!

That is some exciting news Susan :). Getting new chinnies is ALWAYS exciting!
I don't know how I would feel if my boys went into the military.. I'm not sure if they even take type 1 diabetics or not though.

Thanks for the welcome back and concern! I've missed all of you.

And yep it is my right hand...my wood cutting hand :(. We are going up to NY the weekend of June 6th but not sure if we will be getting more wood or not. My hand was in a cast for a week and is in a brace now and probably will be for at least another month. My ortho Dr and I are hoping there is no nerve damage and no surgery is needed. He thinks it is only a very bad sprain with some tendon and ligament damage and muscles tearing in my thumb(the big one that goes into my palm) Maybe I can talk Craig into putting in some cutting hours lol. After all it is ALL his fault! He was carrying boxes in from the garage and kicked the do open hard to get it open wide enough to get through with the boxes. Just as he did that I was on the other side reaching for the knob to go out. It bent my thumb completely back where it touched the back side of my arm. So really I'm not kidding or covering up when I had to tell the ER I ran into a door knob. LOL you should of seen the looks on the DRs faces and the looks they were giving Craig at the ER when I told them that.

So sorry to hear about your kiddos. So, I'm curious, did BOTH of them get diagnosed or did one not and the other did, or one was already diagnosed?? The way I interpret it is that they are both taking insulin...?

And as far as what's been going on here... a whole lot of nothing. Just got done with my last final on Tuesday so schools out for summer. Remy turned 1 last month. I'm so glad it's getting nice outside because Remy loves to be outside!!

WB Kelly. Its good to see you again. Hopefully the worst has past and you will now have more time to come spend with us :).

Ahhh yes School is out.. well almost here anyway!

Both boys were diagnosed and are on insulin. :(

I'm sorry about your kids beeing diagnosed diabetic.

I didn't have it smoot either. I my fiancé broke up, I lost my job, I had trouble finding a new appartment (now I have, thank god). On top of that, I might have celiac disease, I'll know the result in the begening of august.

The door knob incident sounds quite fishy, I agree...lol. I have had my nose broken twice this year...both times by one of the dogs. I know how it is to get "the look" from the doctor. Especially when I'm explaining how it happened and it seems so unreal, even to me.

Hope your hand heals up and you are okay. That sounds really painful!

Hey Kelly - Glad to see you back and glad to hear things are settling into a routine with you guys. You need to stop beating yourself up for something you have no control over, by the way.

Anyway - we need to talk about the wood thing! :p

Good to see you having the time to sit down and visit the forums, Kelly! That's crazy about both of your sons. I hope their diabetes doesn't cause them too many problems.

Ouch about your hand! I hope it gets better soon. My chins could use some of your tasty apple wood ;) :D

A lot has happened in my chinnie world, I lost my beautiful Mako (rip) but I also gained 3 chinnie butts from Peggy, Bear an ex. dk eb, Moose a brown velvet, and Bostin a p/w. I graduated from college with an associate's in science and I am moving to Indianapolis in a few months to continue on with my schooling.

On top of that, I might have celiac disease, I'll know the result in the begening of august.

Aww Fia, I didn't know that. I had a friend who, after endless tests and doctors trying to figure out what was wrong, was finally diagnosed with celiac disease. She went through a lot of pain until they finally figured it out.

Best wishes. You get to read a lot of ingredient labels now, huh?

The strange thing is that I went to see her for something totally different: mostly fatigue, neausea, lack of apetite, weight loss and depression (I even tought I was pregnant, oh dear). She ren blood test and saw that my level of Vitamin B12 where low, wich is weird for a 24-year old meat eater girl. So she gave me supplement and other blod test to run on june to see if it's just the lack of B12 the the disease (without changing my diet). I read on and realise that I had other symptoms of the disease, but I didn't tought about it much before: migrane, cramps, indigestion, acid reflux etc. I just wish it's a coincidence, because it does make buying food or eating out a nightmare.

What a year you're having. I'm glad to see that things are getting to their new "normal" for you guys. I've missed you. :hug2:

Wow I really hope things start to improve for you. All that is happened here in the last year is I am up to 60 chinchillas and I got married.

Chins everywhere will rejoice when your hand is better! LOL

Welcome back Kelly. I was hoping things would sort of level out for you so you could breathe again.

Nothing exciting here. Life is life. :)

Hey Kelly!! It is so good to see you around more now! We all missed you very much.

It sounds like it's been very overwhelming for you, and I'm glad things are finally settling down. I wish the best for you and your family, and I hope everything continues to get better for you all. Take care hun!

Thanks everyone :)

HAHA Ann.. that is too funny. Well not really LOL. I bet they did look at you funny. Can't say I have ever heard of a dog breaking their owners nose... twice LOL.

Aww Stackie I'm so sorry about Mako, Congrats on school and the new chins!

Fia, hope the Drs can figure it out so you can get to feeling better. There is nothing more frustrating when you don't feel good and can't figure out why.

Kristy Congrats on the new chins and the new marrage! Hope you have a long and wonderful partnership.

Everyone is getting new chins from Peggy! Where are mine? HUH?

Well Monika, I told Craig you would KILL him if he didn't cut some wood for you. He said he's scared:eek:
