I'm going to pick up my chinnie Friday, and I was wondering if the cardboard carriers for cats to the vet are OK for a 12 minute drive? My car has air conditioning and the carrier has holes in it for ventilation, he wouldn't get his head stuck in them either.

Just wondering if this is an OK method of temporary transportation? Or should I fork up the $20 for a petco one?

thats what it looks like, I would put a water bottle in there for him too.

For a 12 minute ride, I'd say it'd be okay. However, why not just go ahead and invest in a plastic cat carrier from one of the pet stores in the area for when/if you need to take the chinnie to the vet or wherever (longer trips)?

And you wouldn't need a water bottle for a 12 minute car ride.

I agree with Amanda. It's good to have a plastic cat carrier or even a ryerson carrier on hand. You never know if your chin will get an injury and need to be in a small space/area to restrict movement. If you used that, they would chew out of it guaranteed. I know some chins that have chewed through plastic cat carriers, as well. Also they are good to have on hand for cleaning and other purposes. Overtime, a chin could chew it's way out of there so in the long run it's just better to invest in a plastic or metal carrier.

I do plan on investing in one, I probably will go buy one but didn't want to dig into my savings again this week (just bought my college texts today :[ ) but I would just use it this once, I do plan on getting a cat carrier for the future though because the vet here that treats chins in 30 min away. Thanks guys! :]

They sell small cat carriers that are the perfect size for chinchillas for like $15 dollars at Wal-mart. I would waste any money on a cardboard one when a good one is that cheap. I found them when I was going to pick up Nyx.

I do hope you are prepared for any vet visits and such in the future, especially with getting a Craigslist chin, which can be a huge responsibility. You don't know the exact condition the chin is in until you get him, so you should be prepared financially for the very worst. It may also be a good idea to get a first aid kit before he arrives, just in case. Also, it may not be apparent as soon as you get him that anything is wrong, so it's always good to have emergency funds just in case something pops up in the future. I agree that it would cheaper to run to Walmart and get a plastic cat carrier rather than spending money on the cardboard carrier, especially if you are tight on funds. Good luck.

ETA - THIS carrier is on sale at Target for $15.99 and is available in the store.

Oh I'm not tight on funds, I have plenty in savings but I just wanted to budget as much as possible. I have the cardboard one already, that's the only reason I asked. I wouldn't purchase one over a plastic :]

And what would a chinnie first aid include? Should I order some of that Critical Care stuff or just buy like a normal first aid kit?

I'll head to Target in the morn for the carrier :)

You highly suspected correctly, didn't think that one through, I searched Google :/ I'm not with it today, v_v

I'll be back once I've read all the FAQs thoroughly guys, thanks <3

Well I read all about the chin being the right pet for you and cage stuff and bringing him home, gotta give me some credit :p I just didn't read the health faq yet but I'm on it ^_^ no worries, come Friday he'll be in Chinnie paradise on his way to a healthy lifestyleeee :D

you can use a cardboard box like the one you have pictured (:) thats what i used actually the breeder i got them from told me it would be fine. and seeing that your only taveling a 12 minute drive they cannot chew through it that fast. just have someone hold the box for you while you drive or vice versa....(:) good luck!!

Hey! Thats actually the exact one I got/was talking about! Its super great. it comes apart really easily and you turn the bottom upside down and holds the door and it all clips back together in a happy small size. That was a fantasticly bad description but I hope it gives a good mental image. Fits nicely under an FN though.

Anyway good luck with the new chin!

If you're not in immediate need of a carrier for Friday, I'd consider investing in one of the sturdier metal carriers - I believe you can get decent ones from Ryerson's, JPChinchillas, or Quality Cage. That way you're covered for life, no worries about chewing out.

I've used small cat carriers for the chins in the past. They are fine for quick trips but, not for long or overnight stays. I had unexpected kits from a female I purchased pregnant and needed to separate the male. I had him in a carrier for only a day and he chewed a nice quarter sized hole right by the door.

I have since purchased metal carriers from JP Chinchillas. I like hers because, she offers larger size holes and spring latches. I have one single and two 4-hole.

I love my JP Chinchillas carrier. I got the two hole, though I probably should have went for the 4. Either way, greatest $30.00 I ever spent.
